Pittsburgh Indymedia launches G-Infinity media for the G-20 summit, to bring together grassroots voices to cover issues related to the policies of the G-20 from a people's perspective.

Attention all Pittsburgh Indymedia readers! We are currently in the process of redesigning and rebuilding our website, in an attempt to modernize the services we provide to the Pittsburgh community. We need your help! We are looking for feedback about how people want to be able to interact with the site: readers, authors, camerapeople, videographers, and editors are all encouraged to get in touch with ideas for how this website can be most effective. We are also always in need with people who have experience with computers, including Unix/Linux administration, and Content Management System (especially drupal or sf-active) usage and development. People of all skill levels are encouraged to get in touch: for most of us, Indymedia is a learning experience,and we can help people learn that which they don't know.

Our goal is to have the process complete before the G-20 meetings in Pittsburgh; if this proves unworkable, we'll launch a separate site for the G-20, and then adapt that into our general site after the convergence.

At a little before 9:00 AM on Friday morning, four police officers and two representatives from Pittsburgh Public Works arrived at the Landslide Community Farm farmhouse (#3 Allequippa St.) and told everyone inside to leave -- the house was being boarded up.  Neighbors and community members have reacted quickly to the illegal eviction.

Update: Councilwoman Tonya Payne's office stated she is working to resolve the issue.  People are still calling the city's 311 hotline, and it appears that the phone calls from supporters will continue to be successful in stopping this arbitrary and illegal action by the police and public works department.

Rich White folks represented by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) are trying to remove FNB from Market Square, where the group has served vegitarian food to hungry people for 15 years. 

This past Sunday FNB got kicked out of Market Square by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP), who called in police.  Food Not Bombs is requesting community support on Sunday the 8th at 2pm.

Five Pittsburgh City Council members are taking on the outdoor advertising giant Lamar Advertising Company. Lamar wants to build a giant 1,200 square foot electronic billboard on the new Grant Street Transportation Centre.  Steve Donahue explains how Lamar CEO Kevin Reilly Jr. has a history of using strong-arm tactics to get his way.

On April 12, Mumia Abu-Jamal's lawyer Robert Bryan provided an update on behalf of his client, who is on death row at SCI-Greene in Waynesburg, 60 miles from Pittsburgh.  This comes after the U.S. Court of Appeals issued a long-awaited decision on his case on March 27, 2008.

Carlow University gave parents eight weeks notice that their Early Learning Preschool will be closed as of May 3rd.  Marianne Bryan says that parents are devastated by this news and are seeking help from the community to put pressure on Carlow University president Dr. Hines and board members to reverse this short-sighted decision.

Antiracists have responded to the Garage Door Saloon's recent advertisements for "Wetback Wednesdays."

A contributor gives us a brief explanation on why the "Wetback Wednesdays" at the Garage Door Saloon is a bigger deal than the media is making it out to be.  (The Garage Door Saloon is one of two bars owned by South Side Sin City, Inc. The other is Casey's, on the South Side.)

Then on Wednesday, April 2, antiracists picketed in Oakland outside the bar, saying that the problem is not just with a drink special, but that a white supremacist who owns and operates two bars in Pittsburgh is trying to spread his hateful ideas through his business.

Pittsburgh-based Calgon Carbon Corp. locked out 63 members of USW Local 5032 who work at the Neville Island facility at midnight, Feb. 29.

Union members set up picket lines at the plant's two entrances while management runs the place without longtime workers. Union pickets are maintaining a vigilant 24-hour watch on the plant, and have been joined by Steelworkers and other local supporters.

Workers at this Calgon facility make products and provide services to remove impurities from water and air, as well as reactivating spent carbon for filtration systems and impregnation carbons for personal respirator and other uses.

A federal jury unanimously ruled that two Pennsylvania state police troopers used excessive force and intentionally shot 12-year-old Michael Ellerbe in Uniontown, Pennsylvania in December 2002. On March 11th the jury awarded Ellerbe's family more than $28 million dollars in punitive and compensatory damages.

Over five years ago, 12 year old Michael Ellerbe, an unarmed black boy, was shot in the back by State Troopers Samuel Nassan and Juan Curry as he allegedly ran from a stolen vehicle. While his family and community decried his death as excessive force no serious investigation was launched into Ellerbe's case.

Shortly after his son's death, Michael Hickenbottom,  sued both State Troopers saying that they violated his son's constitutional rights. Over 5 years later, a jury has ruled on this suit and unanimously decided that both Trooper Nassan and Corporal Curry  had intentionally shot Michael Ellerbe.  The verdict refuted trooper Nassan's claim that his gunfire to the 12 year old's back was precipitated by the sound of his partner's gunshot.

While Michael Hickenbottom said he felt somewhat vindicated by the verdict but wonders why a major question has gone unanswered.

"Why did you shoot, I just want to know why did you shoot him in the back," said Hickenbottom at a press conference following the verdict.

According to community activists this historic case shows that those who fight tirelessly against police brutality can win.  "I'm hoping that this will send a clear message to police everywhere, that you can not just kill anyone like this and not be punished," says Celeste Taylor a long time anti-police brutality activist.

Seven years ago, the Federal Communications Commission recognized the need for more diverse programming on the airwaves and allowed for the licensing of new Low Power FM radio stations. This new broadcasting window was immediately closed due to lobbying by powerful commercial radio interests.  Educational institutions, labor unions, churches, towns, and community groups seeking to start Low Power radio stations have faced restrictive license requirements that limit community access to the airwaves.  The Local Community radio act, recently approved by the Senate Commerce committee, should ease these restrictions and allow for hundreds of new non-commercial stations.  In the coming months legislative versions of the Local Community Radio Act will appear before the full Senate and House of Representatives.
