PEOPLE AGAINST POLICE VIOLENCE TO POLICE AND DISTRICT ATTORNEY: YOU CANNOT PROTECT WHAT YOU DO NOT RESPECT
Group To Hold Hold Press Conference On Malcom X Day

WHAT: People Against Police Violence Press Conference

WHERE: Freedom Corner

WHEN: 12:15pm, Wednesday, May 19th, 2004

On Malcolm X Day, May 19, 2004, People Against Police Violence (PAPV) will hold a press conference to demand that local, state and federal authorities take seriously the serious human rights abuses committed by police in the region and the accompanying lack of accountability.

PAPV members and friends will stand with the families of the victims of police violence as they add the name of Andrea Umphrey to the list of casualties. At the press conference, PAPV members are expected to (1) ask Stephen A. Zappala, DA of Allegheny County to resign from all cases of police violence; •(2) tell Mary Beth Buchanan, United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, to release the findings in the Michael Ellerbe case and to file charges against the police officers responsible for the death of Ellerbe; and (3) demand that Governor Rendell name a special prosecutor to look at all the cases of police violence in this state.

In addition, PAPV will bring attention to Charles A. Graner, Jr., an army reservist cited in a military report as supervising the torture of Iraqi prisoners, who is currently employed as a prison guard at the State Correctional Institution at Greene in Waynesburg, PA.

People Against Police Violence works with the families of victims to advocate for justice for the victims of police violence, increase community awareness, and demand that guilty cops serve maximum prison sentences.
