With the elections this past November the country was transfixed on which way the wind would blow politically. Would this be a referendum on President Obama and Democrat policies? Would the Republican party make a comeback? Would the Tea Party protests make a difference this time around? Would Sarah Palin have an impact? (image/jpeg)

Nationally numerous candidates ran for a whole host of different positions. Only two of those races were meant to fill seats in the US House of Representatives. Both went Democrat. (image/jpeg)
MarkWest Compressor Station to Spray Natural Gas into residential area for 20 hours TODAY
Nastassja Noell
2009-11-03 4:26 PM![]()
Natural Gas Production requires gas to be pumped long distances from the well head through pipelines. The gas must first be cleaned of water, sulfur and other gas contaminants at compressor stations; the "sweetened" gas is then pushed down the pipeline by fossil fuel fired compressor engines. The chemist Wilma Subra calls these compressor stations "mini-refineries"; residents complain of constant headaches and strong nauseating smells. Dr. Subra's work has included studying the air quality around compressor stations in Dish Texas where extremely high levels of benzene, toluene, and other carcinogenic and neurotoxic compounds were found hanging in the air, breathed in by residents for the past few years of the natural gas boom. Keep compressor stations out of your community, and advocate for those families who are forced to have these toxic facilities in their backyards: the environmental protection agencies will not help us, their business is to coordinate industry interests. Who Owns the Health Care Debate?
Billy Wharton
2009-09-12 8:23 PM![]()
Considering the number of resources mobilized by the private health insurance lobby, there can be little surprise that HR 3200 is a 1,000-page legislative mess. The pressure of the lobby ensured that any reform is framed as part of new "health insurance exchanges." This idea was concocted by the conservative Heritage Foundation, transmitted by the health care industry lobby, and is now being mouthed by an assortment of politicians as a trailblazing virtue -- note Obama's "choice and competition" slogan. What are these politicians afraid of? Conservative disrupters? Not too many of those in the crowd on this night. More likely. they fear that the will of their constituents will force them to fight for a single-payer system, despite the wishes of corporate lobbyists and campaign contributers. (image/jpeg)
