Pictures from Saturdays activities.

Pictures from the festivities on Saturday.
Saturdays activities went rather well. The weather cooperated, as did the polic for the most part. A festive atmosphere reigned supreme as people gathered and exchanged ideas. Seemingly a good time was had by all. I even noticed the police crack a smile or two along the route once they realized we had no intentions of causing trouble. Five to six-thousand people participated in the march which reportedly stretched a full five city blocks. The pictures were taken during the rally at the Washington Monument and during the march, along with some at the end of the line in Faragut (sp?) Park. The police had us boxed into the park for a few hours, and once the crowd dispersed considerably allowed some to continue on the planned route. I however did not do this, as sirens and a line of marching police in riot gear gave me a bad vibe that it was possibly a trap to herd us into a smaller, enclosed area and arrest us for deviating from the approved route. Luckily such suspicions were proven false, but I called it a day and started heading back. A successful day I must say as only six arrests were reported and the IMF has annouced that they are considering allowing countries with overwhelming debt to file for bankruptcy debt relief - which happened to be one of the main demands of the citizens upon the IMF. Maybe they are just throwing us a bone, maybe they are beginning to change their tune. Either way, it seems as if someone has been listening. Thanks for lending your voice!
If you have any questions pertaining to the pictures of Saturdays festivities feel free to post them here, I'll try to answer them as best I can. If you fall in love with a picture and need a higher resolution copy for printing just drop me a line. As long as I get photo credit for the below pictures, they are free to use.
Thanks everyone!

It was wonderful to see older activists marching alongside the college aged ones in unison.

This large puppet was flanked during the march with people holding cardboard cut-outs of unhappy looking white men in business suits representing corporate greed.

Uncle Sam with an inflatable greedy pig in the background. Sam's hat was of the Corporate American Flag, of which there wany in attendance. My girlfriend wore mine over her shoulders during the march and had many people ask where they could get one. Encouraging indeed.

As we lined up ready to march I shot this one. If you look closely you'll see the fencing and jersey barriers set up to keep the protestors away from teh tourists around the Washington Monument. Early in the rally there were police gaurding the entrance to the fenced in, tourists-only area, but they left as the rally went on.

This was the very beginning of the march. Directly in front of these activists was a large truck with a sound system urging on the activists and leading them along the designated route.

Shot of some activists during the march which ended up being very peaceful, and in my mind at least, productive as many pamphlets were handed out to onlookers.

These were the counterprotestors. Not too many of them really, just a handful spouting forth the same rhetoric as always. Telling us to go to Cuba, a place that they would surely love as one cannot voice one's opinion freely...just what they want. These were the first police seen along the route.
Cops on Sidewalk

Step onto the sidewalk and get a police baton in the ribs. Police from jurisdictions around the area and from as far away as Chicago lined the route and made sure no one stepped on the sidewalk or got too close to any fancy looking buildings.

This was the end of the line for a few hours. The police did not get involved with any effigy or flag burning activities that went on. Word is that they did however arrest one person for putting tape on the statue. Go figure.
