At the end of November 2002, do not miss a series of important events in Pittsburgh centered on the activities of Emergency, the humanitarian organization that since 1994 has provided relief and medical assitance to war victims in many countries of the world.
In contemporary armed conflicts, civilians rather than combatants comprise some 90 percent of the casualties. In most conflict-ridden countries, injuries, hunger, and dislocation typically overwhelm minimal healthcare and other support services. Inevitably, any post-conflict national reconstruction effort must address these issues before the country can be stable and self-sustaining.
Emergency, co-founded by Dr. Gino Strada, is a humanitarian organization of volunteers that since 1994 has been bringing relief to war victims and built hospitals in war zones like Sierra Leone, Cambodia, Northern Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Dr. Strada will be in Pittsburgh at the end of November for a series of events organized by local and national organizations.
In particular, do not miss the town meeting ' REBUILDING FROM CONFLICT: LIFE SUPPORT FOR CIVILIAN WAR VICTIMS', organized by the World Affair Council and the Graduate School of Public Health, University Of Pittsburgh. The meeting will take place in the Lecture Hall of the Frick Fine Arts Building, University of Pittsburgh on November 21st 2002, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. A viewing of video 'Afghanistan: Collateral Damages, recentlt aired by PBS as 'Afghanistan:Year 1380', is scheduled, and a panel formed by Dr. Strada and other experts will discuss the video and respond to audience questions.
Please contact Dr. Alberto Colombi if you wish to receive more information on the events.
