NLGJA LOOKS TO PITTSBURGH FOR NEW CHAPTER
The National Lesbian and Gay Journalist Association Visits Pittsburgh Market to Begin Laying Ground-work for New Chapter
Out in Pittsburgh . com Named Official Sponsor of Event
Philadelphia, PA Pamela Strother, National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association Executive Director, announces plans for the development of an NLGJA chapter in Western Pennsylvania that will look to attract members from Pittsburgh, Johnstown,
Mc Keesport, Erie as well as Eastern Ohio.
On February 22, 2003, journalists, journalism students, academic leaders in journalism and other media and public relations professionals are invited to attend a social networking opportunity to learn more about the new chapter. From 6:00 PM 9:00 PM, interested individuals can stop by the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Pittsburgh (5808 Forward Avenue in Squirrel Hill) for light horsdouvers and cocktails.
The evening will be sponsored by Out in Pittsburgh.com. RSVPs also welcomed by emailing Brandon Hamm at NLGJAPittsburgh@yahoo.com.
In an effort to build our network of media professionals throughout the country, we are always facilitating the launch of new chapters, said Strother. Until now, the Pittsburgh members were part of the Philadelphia chapter. By creating a chapter in western Pennsylvania, it will enable members to hold their own programs and events and network in their own area.
NLGJAs individual chapters are each governed by a local board of directors and can plan and execute their own events and programs. From plenaries to speaker panels, the goals of the NLGJA are to foster fair and acurate news coverage of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered people and to oppose workplace bias against all minitorites. The future NLGJA Pittsburgh chapter will carry out this mission to its local members and also offer professional development for their constituents.
