PITTSBURGH, PA (March 4, 2003) The Sprout Fund solicits applications from artists and community groups for participation in its pilot public art initiative: the Community Murals Project. Deadline for Artists: April 4 Deadline for Communities: April 14 With support from the American Eagle Outfitters Foundation, The Sprout Fund will bring artists and communities together in collaboration, throughout the spring and summer of 2003, to create eight murals in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities of Allegheny County. Through the Community Murals Project, Sprout Public Art serves to further the mission of the Sprout Fund to provide a vehicle to engage young talent in thinking creatively about innovative solutions that will help to shape a new culture and vision for the region. Sprout Public Art will accomplish these goals by: establishing a forum for dialogue on public art between the artist and the community, contributing to community and neighborhood development, raising awareness about the important role that local artists can have in shaping communities. The concept of community engagement is central to Sprouts vision for site-specific public art. Through a collaborative process, artists and community organizations together will develop enduring public art that enhances the urban landscape and considers the people of the community, their history, and their hopes for the future.
