Logan County officials anticipate a million-dollar economic benefit from hosting a picnic this weekend of 25,000 Massey Energy employees, the largest gathering the county's top economic developer can remember.

"I'm not sure we've ever had an event this large in the county," said Rocky Adkins, the director of the Logan County Development Office.

Hotels were booked from Logan to Charleston for the private event that starts Saturday. Massey Energy has invited all of its employees and their families to the picnic at the Logan School complex on Midelburg Island.

Last year, a similar event at Charleston's Magic Island drew both throngs of people and criticism. Thousands of people came to the picnic, but Massey Energy was sued by people who believed the event's location in a public park meant it should be open to the public.

Massey Energy restored Magic Island after the weekend left the park worn, muddy and swampy.

This year's version in Logan also has been the subject of a lawsuit. Some residents didn't want Massey to rent school buses to shuttle employees to Midelburg Island, but a judge denied the motion.

Attendance on Saturday is limited to company employees, but Sunday's events are open to the public with a $4 admission fee going to the school system's extracurricular programs.

Performers during the picnic include country stars Crystal Gayle, Patty Loveless and Dwight Yoakam, Adkins said. There are also carnival-style rides and games, as well as interactive presentations meant to highlight the importance of the coal industry.
