Over 1000 battery hens rescued from Buckeye Egg "Farm" now safe at OohMahNee farm sanctuary.
Aug. 4, 2003 -- This morning at 9:30 a.m., Buckeye Egg Farm released 1,048 spent laying hens to OohMahNee, a Farmed Animal Sanctuary located in Hunker, Pa, approximately 30 miles east of Pittsburgh.
We are very grateful to be able to bring so many hens to sanctuary, especially because they were headed to slaughter this morning, said Cayce Mell, co-founder and co-director of OohMahNee. Its a beautiful transformation to witness these ladies adjusting to their new home.
Mell spent several weeks negotiating with the Buckeye director of operations, William Leininger, after learning that the rapid depopulation order would most likely result in the burning or bulldozing of 14 million living hens. Buckeye, which is located in Croton, Ohio, had been granted a stay and was in the process of appealing the shutdown order and announced that it had no plans to release hens to any animal-protection group.
We urged Leininger to release hens to OohMahNee to demonstrate their intentions to see that this situation is going to be handled as humanely as possible, said Mell. Of course, theres nothing more humane than allowing these birds to live out the rest of their natural lives in freedom. This was a gesture of goodwill to signal Buckeyes intention of continuing a working relationship for this and future hen releases.
OohMahNee is a farmed animal sanctuary and rescue that was founded in 1995. The sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, placement, and protection of abused, abandoned, neglected, or displaced farmed animals, and equally dedicated to advocating compassion through humane education.
The sanctuary is presently home to over 2,000 rescued farm animals, including todays new residents.
