March 20 Pittsburgh Call for a Youth Bloc!
Over the last 15 months, Pittsburgh has taken a vehement stand against the war and occupation of Iraq. And throughout this struggle, the youth of Pittsburgh have been a constant and enthusiastic contributor to our attempts to stop the war. One year after the invasion of Iraq, one year after beginning of the slaughter of innocent citizens of Iraq, one year after the onset of senseless and tragic military engagements results in the loss of so many promising lives, both Iraqi and American, Pittsburgh will once again take to the streets to register its protest. As the future of this city, this country, and this world, youth must rise up to stop this egregious wrong. This is a call for the youth of Pittsburgh to join together and combine their voices to say, “Stop the War and Occupation!” On March 20th, the Anti-War Committee of the Thomas Merton Center has organized a march and rally, endorsed by 52 different groups, as the centerpiece of the weekend long regional convergence events. More information at the convergence and mass march-rally is available at http://www.pittsburghmarch20.org
The youth of Pittsburgh and the surrounding region must play a key role in making sure that the message of this event gets through. In order to accomplish this, youth must play a visible role in all the activities of the weekend. To this end, we, youths from all over the region, from all different socio-economic backgrounds, and from all different types of beliefs, will march together as a ‘Youth Bloc’. We must also participate in other activities during the weekend, especially including the civil disobedience (A non-violent sit-in) being organized by the Pittsburgh Organizing Group (http://www.organizepittsburgh.org) to directly attack the war machine at Carnegie Mellon University. This March 20th, let us take a new step towards stopping the war. Let the youth of Pittsburgh find their voice in the streets. Let us put the world on notice that our generation will not tolerate wars of aggression. The ‘Youth Bloc’ will be gathering at 1:00pm at Flagstaff Hill, look for the youth themed banner.
Let us create the world we want to live in.
