Working to Stop Swedish-Israeli Trade in Arms

A speech delivered to denounce the ongoing trade in arms between ''social democratic'' Sweden and Zionist Israel.

The following is the text of a speech delivered by the author in the city of Gothemburg, Sweden during a demonstration against the Israeli invasion of Lebanon/Palestine held on August 6th, 2006. The speech sought to urge listeners to become involve in the work of the anti-war network in general and in specific to urge the interested to act politically as citizens to stop the Swedish purchase of Israeli-made weaponry and components. In context of the conversion of the Swedish armed forces from ''active defense'' to ''rapid reaction'' ; Swedish made tanks and armored vehicles are being fitted with Israeli manufactured components:

''Worldwide there is an effort by grassroots movements to pressure the United States and Israel to accept a ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza and engage in diplomatic negotiations over the crisis in the Middle East. The United States and Israel so far refuse to do so because there is not enough pressure being exerted from the ground by social movements. Even though Sweden is not directly involved militarily in the conflict over Lebanon; it would be an extremely positive development if the government of Sweden would act to stop weapons imports from Israel ; specifically components for tanks and armored vehicles, until its government agrees to a ceasefire and enters negotiations. If Sweden would stop buying Israeli weaponry this would have a direct impact on Israeli war industry profits. ''

''In a number of countries that are not directly involved in the Middle East wars, there have taken place numerous anti-war protests in solidarity with protests inside Israel; where 5000 peace activists – Jewish and Arab- marched in Tel Aviv and Haifa to demand the withdrawal of IDF forces from Gaza and Lebanon and to stop the air war. ''

''If you are among those of us whoagree that the terrorist bombardment of civilians in Gaza and Beirut should stop and you want to do something meaningful that will send a message to the Swedish government to stop weapons imports from Israel until it agrees to a ceasefire and to negotiations; then I encourage you to join the anti-war network and help us shut down this war !''
