text The Hidden Draft in Our Schools Captain Eric H. May 2006-08-22 8:41 PM
With a vast majority of the US public disapproving of the quicksand war in Iraq, how can American educators continue to allow unchecked and unscrupulous recruiting in our high schools? A former Army officer takes a look at the problem of gutless school leaders who let their students be turned into Bush League cannon fodder -- then offers some suggestions on how to change things. text ABA Takes on Bush Regime Kenneth J. Theisen 2006-08-10 7:36 PM
On January 24, 2006, the American Bar Association (ABA) issued a press release stating that, “Presidential signing statements that assert President Bush’s authority to disregard or decline to enforce laws adopted by Congress undermine the rule of law and our constitutional system of separation of powers…” The press release was publicizing a report by a blue-ribbon ABA task force which was created in June 2006 to examine the “changing role of presidential signing statements” under the Bush administration. On August 8, 2006, the ABA’s House of Delegates overwhelmingly approved the report by voting to call on President Bush and future presidents not to issue signing statements that claim the power to bypass laws, and it called on Congress to pass legislation to outlaw the practice. peace picket tomorow Picket at CMU's National Robotics Engineering Center > >> Wednesday, August 9th, 12 noon > >> National Robotics Engineering Center >> 43rd St. & Willow (main gate), Lawrenceville >> Organized by Duncan Porter House of Hospitality > >> CMU's National Robotics Engineering Center develops tactical robotic >> vehicles for the U.S. Army and Marines. unmanned robotic combat truck unveiled at CMU Carnegie Mellon's new Crusher next generation could find its own way Saturday, April 29, 2006 By Joe Fahy, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Carnegie Mellon University rolled out its latest unmanned combat prototype vehicle yesterday in a display of speed and mobility that would make a monster truck show look tame. Darrell Sapp, Post-Gazette The newly unveiled autonomous robotic vehicle "Crusher" shows how it can take on difficult terrain, at the National Robotics Engineering Center in Lawrenceville. It weights 6.5 tons. NREC is part of the Robotics Institute in Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science. The work is funded by the U.S. Army and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The National Robotics Engineering Center, part of the CMU Robotics Institute, unveiled Crusher, a six-wheeled vehicle billed as leaner and more agile than its predecessor, Spinner, but also more durable and able to handle a heavier payload. Two Crusher vehicles paraded slowly before an audience at the center's headquarters in Lawrenceville before one of them headed outside to clamber nimbly over logs and other obstacles, a quality that earned it its name. A video presentation showed the vehicle speeding through rough terrain. The center is the prime contractor for Crusher, a project funded by the Army and the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, known as DARPA. Since 2001, DARPA has awarded the center more than $35 million for the development of Crusher, its predecessors and autonomous navigation technology, which allows the vehicles to drive by themselves without human supervision. Eventually, the military hopes to use large unmanned vehicles for reconnaissance, re-supply of troops or other needs -- the "dull, dirty and dangerous tasks that can be better accomplished by machines," said Steve Welby, director of DARPA's tactical technology office. Unlike Spinner, Crusher is not designed to keep operating if it flips over. The Crusher design team concluded that abandoning the capacity for inverted operation, while maintaining some of Spinner's other design characteristics, would offer dramatic reductions in weight, complexity and cost. At 6.5 tons, Crusher is nearly one-third lighter than its predecessor, but can comfortably handle a four-ton payload. Features include a light, strong frame made of aluminum and titanium and a suspension system that allows the vehicle to either rest on its belly or have 30 inches of ground clearance, allowing for greater ease in clearing obstacles. Electric motors in each of the wheels allow them to run at different speeds. Still, "you hit things you don't expect," said John Bares, the center's director. So Crusher is equipped with an energy-absorbing nose and a protective plate beneath the vehicle, with blocks of rubber around the chassis to absorb shock. To provide maximum power with minimum weight, Crusher has a turbo-diesel engine that recharges the vehicle's batteries. With the engine turned off, Crusher can operate quietly for two miles or more on battery power alone. At yesterday's demonstration, operators directed both Crusher vehicles using remote controls. But plans calls for outfitting Crusher later this year with autonomous navigation that will allow the vehicle to find its own way to a specified location, adjusting for obstacles it may encounter. Testing will be done in Colorado later this summer. (application/pdf)

No Blood for Oil - Sign the Voter's Pledge
"No More Oil Wars-- Clean Energy Now!" This popular sentiment must find expression in government policy, and it is our job this fall to make every candidate running for Congress understand that this is what our people want. We should be circulating the VotersForPeace Pledge which declares that those signing "will not vote for or support any candidate for Congress or President who does not make a speedy end to the war in Iraq, and preventing any future war of aggression, a public position in his or her campaign." We must make visible this popular desire for peace, a rapid transition to clean energy and justice. (image/jpeg)

How can you help? Get involved and take part in the Cabhair monthly sustainer! Cabhair, is an Irish charitable organisation that provides financial assistance to the dependants and family members of Irish Republican political prisoners. I would urge everyone who reads this to help them in this most noble of work by making a contribution. Cumann Na Saoirse Náisiúnta (National Irish Freedom Committee) sends all collected donations straight to Cabhair through its Monthly Sustainer program. The program is the cornerstone of the NIFC's Irish Republican Political Activists Support (IRPAS) Campaign. The Sustainer program operates on the pledge principle, whereby, donors pledge a monthly contribution: the amount to be decided by the donor. The National irish Freedom Committee is getting the word out that there are still Republican political prisoners in both Irish states and that the dependants of these prisoners and other political activists deserve our assistance. Get involved! Participants in the program will receive monthly bulletins informing them of up to date information regarding the plight of political activists who are imprisoned on the inside or in a state of virtual imprisonment on the outside! The National Irish Freedom Committee supports the dependents of Republican political prisoners through Cabhair in Ireland. Cabhair has been in existence for many years supporting the dependents of faithful Republican prisoners, and ensnared Éire Nua political activists throughout the 32 Irish counties. Anyone wishing to take part in the program should contact at: IRPAS@irishfreedom.net and visit the NIFC's website at: http://www.irishfreedom.net (text/plain)

Emitting millions of pounds of pollutants yearly, the Clinch River coal plant threatens the health and lives of thousands of downwind residents and the surrounding environment. text Bush Attempts to Silence Media Kenneth J. Theisen 2006-06-30 7:22 PM
On Monday, June 26, 2006 the President and Vice-President in a concerted effort launched political attacks on the New York Times and other media for their exposure of the international bank transfer spying program conducted by the Bush administration. These attacks serve two purposes for the Bush regime. First, they are an attempt to intimidate the media into silence about the regime’s crimes. Second, they are meant to shift the discussion about the illegality of these actions to a discussion of what should be done to media outlets that dare to report such actions. (text/plain)

No Pride in War - picketing the military recruitment station
On June 17, as Pittsburgh's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) communities gathered downtown to celebrate the anniversary of the Stonewall riots against heterosexist police, POG returned to the Oakland recruiting station to mark the occasion by confronting another homophobic institution – the United States military – with the theme, “No Pride in War.” Queer members (and allies) of POG felt it was also important to call into question the mainstream gay rights movement's narrow, single-issue approach to challenging the military's discriminatory employment policy. Audre Lorde said, "Your silence will not protect you," and so about 20 people gathered outside the station to say, “Ban the Military! Not Lesbians and Gays!” During the event, a banner was dropped from the roof of a building facing the windows of the recruiting station. (image/jpeg)

Killing season in the Philippines
The escalating repression taking place now in the Philippines is no coincidence. Twenty years since the end of the dictatorship and three "people's power" uprisings later, Philippine society is hugely polarized. If the recent killing spree signifies anything, it's that the growing coercion and the abandonment of democratic rights portend the fraying of the post-1986 political order, when the dictator Marcos was unceremoniously thrown from power and democracy restored. What will replace those democratic hopes, more than at any time in recent years, is a point of bitter political contention. (image/gif)

Protesting Haditha Massacre and Other Atrocities
Pittsburgh anti-war protesters express anger over Haditha and ongoing atrocities. In response to the recent news of atrocities in Iraq 60 people gathered in Shadyside for a short rally and march. Participants called for an end to the Iraq war and expressed revulsion at news of recent atrocities. The march stopped traffic and took over Walnut Street in Shadyside. Protesters moved street signs and a dumpster into the road, smashed at least one window, and threw rocks at corporate stores. Ten police cars, an animal control van, and two unmarked cars showed up and forced the march onto the sidewalk. The march proceeded for another hour through Shadyside and Bloomfield. text Can Congress Stop the Burning of the American Flag? Kenneth J. Theisen 2006-06-08 2:26 PM
Sometime between now and the 2006 elections in November, the U.S. Senate will debate one of the most pressing questions facing the American people. No, they will not debate the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and possible U.S. withdrawal. They will not take up the Bush regime’s preparations for war, possibly even nuclear war, against Iran. They will not seriously talk about global warming, the degradation of the environment, preparations for the coming hurricane season, or the Bush regime’s massive spying on the American people, or any other pressing issues. Instead they will debate whether or not to amend the constitution to allow Congress to ban the burning of the American flag. (text/plain)
