University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University are among nine institutions cited for failure to comply with public access provisions of federal biotechnology research by the Sunshine Project. The Sunshine Project, a German and Texas-based non-profit organization that strives to avert the dangers of new weapons stemming form advances in biotechnology, has lodged a federal complaint with the National Institutes of Health Office of Biotechnology Activities (NIH OBA). They seek immediate suspension of federal funding to the institutions and a fifteen day deadline for compliance.
On Malcolm X Day, May 19, 2004, People Against Police Violence (PAPV) held a press conference in which they demanded that Stephen A. Zappala, DA of Allegheny County to resign from all cases of police violence and that Governor Rendell name a special prosecutor.

The Campaign for A Foie Gras-Free Pittsburgh has been going strong lately, with two successes under their belt. The campaign, which is motivated by the recognition that foie gras (a spread made from inflamed goose and duck liver) is produced under conditions that all would abhor as inhumane has already gotten two restaurants to remove it from their menus. As Baum Vivant in Oakland and the Carlton downtown have both pledged to stop selling foie gras, activists are turning their attention towards Lucca, a prominent Italian restaurant in Oakland.
The protesters have been leafleting and holding signs at least twice weekly, and are encouraging concerned individuals to contact Lucca and other restaurants to express their displeasure with foie gras.

In remembrance of those who have recently died, as well as to denounce the torture and humiliation of Iraqis by U.S. troops, Pittsburgh Organizing Group held a silent "funeral procession" on Sunday, May 16th in Oakland. The march toured past local institutions with specific ties to the war. Flyers to bring about awareness of the ties between CMU and the military were also distributed to passers-by.

From PhillyIMC - Charles A. Graner, Jr., an army reservist cited in a military report as supervising the torture of Iraqi prisoners, is currently employed as a prison guard at the State Correctional Institution at Greene in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, according to the PA Abolitionists. SCI-Greene is a super-maximum security prison 50 miles south of Pittsburgh and home to the overwhelming majority of the state's death row prisoners including Mumia Abu-Jamal.
