Student Strike at CMU

The "Student Strike" was quiet at CMU. Personal account follows.

Students at Carnegie Mellon were busy taking mid-term examinations this week, and others were leaving for the brief mid-semester break. But a few did manage to participate in the Student Strike.

A last minute decision was made by some of us involved with the Progressive Student Alliance to hold something in solidarity with the Student Strike. But we're lame, so our event was scheduled for a time when no classes take place. We decided to hold a reading of Dr. Seuss's "The Butter Battle Book", which is an allegory to the Cold War and Dr. Seuss's best known anti-war book. We held the reading in the middle of campus and amplified it with our primitive PA (actually a bullhorn).

About 5 students gathered around at various points to participate in the reading. We took turns reading from the book. Other people who passed by enjoyed the reading as well. We may schedule another reading soon, or perhaps a viewing of the excellent video.

Bread and butter was had by all, with most of us choosing to have our bread butter side down. No violent confrontations with the police ocurred.
