Activist busy removing posters

Local enviromental problem, removing graffitti (including advertisements/flyers) from my neighborhood keeps me from activism on more important issues.
I am 56 years old, and have much experience in activism. I am living on disability, and would love to focus on important issues of the day. My time and energy is used, instead, removing posters (yes, from groups opposed to the coming war, crappy bands and bars that cater to those who listen to them are but a few of the posters). Recently, after talking with one of the folks at organize pittsburgh, from their number on their website, I am convinced my time will be wasted in the daunting task of local enviromental cleanup.
You can help get this activist back onto the important issues of the day, simply by posting flyers in places that the owners give permission. It's quite easy, most businesses will allow you to post them in their windows. Why be part of a serious problem, when you could have an ally in the solution?

flyering is a way that people find out about whats
going on in pittsburgh. paper is biodegradable
and not that serious of an enviromental issue.
as long as there is injustice and interesting
events going on in pittsburgh, there will be people
flyering for different things. i believe you are waging
a futile battle, and thwarting the positive aspects of
flyering. i also believe its a freedom of speech issue.
and in fact you are aiding in the censorship of
a voice that seldom gets heard.
if you are serious about environmental issues,
i would suggest looking into different companies
around the area that are polluting severly into the
environment, alcoa for instance. the imf and world
bank also aid corporations in there effort to
pollute the world. this is another worthy cause
environmentalist are working on. there is also
severe dumping that goes on around the city despite
the signs warning severe fines. war as usual is
bad for the earth as well. how much environmental
destruction and pollutants does one bomb leave?
i'd reckon a lot more than a couple measly flyers
announcing an anti-war protest.
let the flyers be.

yes. I talked to this person on the phone. In the course of our coversation I indicated that I don't personally flyer and that I have no idea who was doing the flyering as they are usually available on our website and at various locations. Besides the rather hostile and confrontational tone, he informed me that he: would be going around to the business's in the area encouraging them to call pog to complain, that he was calling the Thomas Merton Center to complain even though it was only our website on the flyers, that if he saw people on the street flyering he was going to apprehend them with a citizens arrest (which I informed him he can't legally do in a case like this), that he owned property in the area which we're bringing down the value of by flyering, that he and other property owners have spent a lot of time to make this area a "nice" place and it's being ruined by flyering.
Well...

Well Bart, we are forced to flyer. I have some issues with putting them up also. I don't like that it uses a lot of paper or makes poles look ugly. But then again, we have no other way of getting our message across. In the weeks following heavy flyering we are able to see appreciable jumps in the readership of our website. Flyering works! Personally, I have come to know of events and organizations through flyering whereas I wouldn't hace a clue otherwise. I am not alone in avoiding storefronts like the plague, too much commercialism to filter out to read the message on a flyer. You claim that environmental reasons make you want to tear them down, but I believe that in tearing them down you are only contributing to the problem. Once they have been printed and placed upon a pole, tearing them down only makes it so the paper was used in vain. Now not only was paper used, but someone (you) tore it down thus making it impossible to get the message contained on said flyer across, and forcing us to flyer even more! Looks like we'll just have to move on up to using wall paper paste rather than wheatpaste in the future.
Good luck in your citizen's arrest attempts if you are ever presented with the opportunity. Something tells me that a strange, older man on the street approaching a people and trying to arrest them will not be successful. Whoever you approach will either just leave the area, or if you try to use force, will resist. You see, if you come up to me on the street and try to use force to arrest me, I will be forced to act in self defense to get away from you. What would you do if someone on the street tried to detain you?
Bart - times change. We all are working against our goverments policies. We should be doing it together, not working against each other. Change will never happen if people like you are thwarting the attempts of a younger generation to mobilize.

Mr. Flyer taking down man - your intentions of keeping the environment clean are in the right place, but the way to go about that isnt to rip down posters of progressive groups that advocate conservation and fight against environmental rape.

It's interesting that you don't understand that the appearence of neighborhoods is VERY important to those who live in and invest in them. If my time is taken up dealing with - illegal- postings in my neighborhood, then it is time lost from what you might deem important issues. I'd like to spend time fighting for common issues, but MORONS keep trying to destroy our local efforts at making a nice neighborhood. I guess that's why they say, "It takes an entire village, to raise an idiot!".
Is this the South Side guy?
by Mike

Those flyers really mar the appearance of the urine, vomit and traffic in the South Side. It's funny that someone who lives off of public funds, is so opposed to reclaiming public space. Automobiles, billboards and drunks are pollution, not handbills.
Moron eh?

...Based on your comments I've totally reconsidered my viewpoint Bart! That name calling sure did work. It hurts me, it really does. Deep inside. You've called me a moron in this post, and based on that I''m going to change my actions. Yeah, right. Come on Bart, can't talk about the issues we've brought up eh? Can't address our points about it having a noticible effect on web traffic? What about not having any other way to get the word across to a large portion of our targeted audience? Nah, figures... Name calling is always what the ignorant resort to.
Just let it me known Bart, that your two hands can't take down 30 hands worth of flyers. And I advise you for your own safety to not try to citizen's arrest anyone, for again, it can easily be construed as an attack by a strange man on the street... And something tells me that a 56 year old man on disability shouldn't be putting himself in the position of a possibly violent confrontation.
We've got our messages to spread: peace, equality, mobilization, a paradigm shift in thinking. You've got your cause: censorship.

Posters can be a good thing
by Nick
Thursday, Mar. 13, 2003 at 3:24 PM
I have a hard time understanding how flyers and posters could significantly reduce the appeal of a public place. There's a very pricy shopping street in my neighborhood in Portland where people have made a custom of mummifying the phone polls in posters and leaflets for concerts, parties, plays, community events, political messages, lost and found pets and belongings, job openings etc. It's like having three or four cylindrical public bulletin boards on every block. It makes the street more colorful, provides interesting reading material while waiting for the bus and you never have to worry about getting dirty bumping into a tarry phone pole. The city doesn't have a problem with it, they just come and peel off the posters when they get too thick. Local businesses don't mind either since it adds to the sense of community meeting space that draws people to the area.
Please Understand...
by long-time activist
Thursday, Mar. 13, 2003 at 4:09 PM
I have an understanding of where environmental concerns come up with flyering, however, after years of internal conflict, I am a proud wheatpaster for IMPORTANT causes. Here is why:
Yes, I used to go from storefront to storefront giving business owners my posters. I could usually find very few owners who would publicly take a stand on anything that could turn away business. This included anti-racist flyers which were not very divisive at all.
After wasting a lot of time trying to be a one-man outeach committee, and hearing from several people: "I would have gone if I had known about it" I was convinced its okay to flyer with either push-pins or tape, and remembering to remove the posters when the event passed would not comprimise my standing as a good citizen.
Well, self-righteous people like this guy would tear down my easily removable posters within 24 hours of putting them up. I would flyer the same place several times a week, yet the posters would be removed immediately. Obviously, I had better things to do than poster the same place over and over again, like planning the actual event.
Ironically, I have seen the same pro-war poster on the corner of Ella and Liberty, along with a few independant wrestling advertisements in the same neighborhood, up since last September. There are also "work for PENN PGH" posters from early summer. I saw flyers up in the south side for a lost puppy, yet they will remain up for months, trust me. My antiwar posters however? Gone in two days. Don't try to claim you are beautifying anything. You just don't like the issues, your bias has been blatent.
So now, I wheatpaste with pride. Some people have told me it even looks like we live in a real city for a change. I'm sure not everyone agrees with this statement. And thats why we have SUBURBS!! You don't even have to deal with all the black people out there, you'll love it. ;-)
Seeing that our corporate-owned media will only cover good events if there is a groundswell of people talking about it, I find no alternative to wheatpasting. I will also personally continue to scrape the wheatpasted flyer off every pole I post, just because I am an environmentalist.
But please, consider this: If you want to save the earth, tear down the whole damn electric pole, not my little flyer. They cause cancer and fry squirrels.

seriously brad. when was the last time someone asked me if it was okay to erect a huge billboard in my hood every 60 feet? when was the last time someone asked me if it was okay to light up the night with company signage? when was the last time someone asked me if it was okay to pollute my visual environment with strabucks, mcdonalds and walmart in every single neighborhood? c'mon brad its called public space for a reason. i will agree that sloppy overkill of posters isn't all that great. postering and graffiti are very beautiful and challenging forms of art. please don't hate artists, baby. i don't think slabs of concrete are beautiful. what the fuck is wrong with pittsburgh? why to artists that wish to donate their art to the community get shit on? fuck that...RECLAIM PUBLIC SPACE.

You'll notice that it doesn't matter what issue is in the message, if it's posted illegaly, it gets torn down. It a shame your limited experience is wasted, I think you'd gain from thinking locally, then graduating to global issues.
Most of the people who are busy destroying the neighborhoods with graffitti, aren't the kind who save the world. I doubt if most of them even shovelled their walks this winter, or kept after the litter in their own neighborhood the rest of the year. Live by what you preach, your message will have some creditability after you do.
As for living on public funds, I paid into a plan that is paying. It's not "public funds" as you call it. I paid into it for over 35 years, and the amount is probably more than you'll pay. Did you get subsidies to go to school, or did you pay for it out of pocket, as I did?
I've fought battles of greater inportance than this, and I will continue. It might tie up thirty hands, as my two hands and perserverance will not falter. It's to bad you are so ignorant of the time lost on this issue, as
we could use the time to stop the up coming war, and maybe have the money to send others to school, or get health insurance (yes, with public funds, hey, not a bad idea, eh?); instead of having money and lives diverted to war. Trust me, I have seen these sorts of conflicts, keep the main (and mutual) objective from getting accomplished. The slaughter will occurr, if you allow sloppy communication practices (read illegal posters slapped up everywhere), it's in your court, now.
You'll have to live with your mistakes, maybe even get drafted into the war, that would be a loss. All, because you think it's okay to make neighborhoods look like hell. Wether, another area (Portland) thinks it's okay to waste tax dollars tearing done advertisements and removing graffitti, or not,;it's money and time that could be used on education, health care, or perhaps, DIPLOMACY.

Sorry Bart but most wheatpaste stays up for a long time. The city etc doesnt take it down. What covers it up is more posters.
As far as the enviro stuff that is stupid. Wheatpaste is flour and water, that's all!!! It saves a ton of paper (assholes rip down flyers that are taped or stapled if it's for a progressive issue) and is more effective then face to face flyering.
It's funny that you complain about this but you aren't doing jack about the giant billboards, the advertising on bus stops, and everything else that is polluting our environment beyond belief in the name of PROFIT (as opposed to stopping the deaths of thousands of innocent people)
Time wise you are wasting your time. It will take you maybe 30 times as long to take down a poster that's dried then it takes to put one up. If you want to waste your time on that be my guest.
We don't have another choice. We don't have millions of dollars to counteract corporate advertising and gov't propoganda. We use what we have and it's working. It is one of the main means of getting our info to the public and it works. People show up to events, visit website, etc. For every complaint ten people who support the issue find out about it (that is an accurate number based on my experience with events)
I've yet to meet anyone that would have gone to an anti-war event but didn't because well gosh darn we turnout them off with that wheatpasting. People say the same shit about tying up traffic, tying up sidewalks, interfering with sports, disrupting shopping, and the list goes on and on. There is a fucking war going on. Get your priorities in check.

Bart:
So, we are "destroying neighborhoods" with these flyers. I guess you think we are also selling heroin, pimping your sisters, and funneling chemicals into the resevoirs. (I'd like to see you to write something chastizing these people in your neighborhood)
Putting up flyers which make people re-think bombing entire countries and calling for people of all races to come together make for a neighborhood which can think critically. We are actually increasing the likelihood that your children will succeed in school by getting them interested in following world events, and sparking empathy in thier day-to-day interactions. In addition, if you followed basic civil planning, you would know that where the "trendy" wheatpasters move, the trendy shops and cafes move. Where the trendy shops move, the neighborhood economy swells. Where the economy swells, people like me have to move out (can't afford the rent) and KLA-POW: Shadyside.
On the whole "You are helping the war economy by wheatpasting" theory... You're joking, right? Anti-war posters that mobilize people to show up for anti-war rallies contibute to the war machine?!? I invite you to flesh that one out. In light of the fact more people have attended anti-war rallies and marches in Pittsburgh this year than any year during the Vietnam era, you just aren't convincing me.
Peace.

Friday, Mar. 14, 2003 at 7:22 AM
Good morning, polelutters, the enviromental guard is up and running this morning. Hope you didn't spend to much valuable time at the poles, yesterday. Seems you spent an awful lot of time on the keyboard, instead of stopping a war. How do you expect to win? You are pathetic! Shame on you, maybe your parents should unplug your MTV, for the weekend? Oops, even they won't allow the "progressive" message to get through, but you still watch them, don't you?. The only difference between their agenda and mine, I remove ALL advertising, the message content, doesn't matter.
Did your parents give you your allowance, for the week? Maybe, you could donate it to a worthwhile cause? Since, you wouldn't be caught using public funds for education, (as it will now be used on the war effort), may I suggest saving up for tuition? Or, you could help your idol, Mook, pay his fines. His work is the same as yours, so why not contribute? His rational for his behavior is the same as the polelluters.
Well, off to the front, and enjoying it. Ah, enviromental cleanup, is so rewarding!
Feel free to use my coined word, "polelluters". You'll see more of it, I can assure you. - Bart

If you have done any travelling, you would know that posters, agitprop art, and political graffiti are a part of any vibrant, democratic urban culture. For example, I heard that right now, big parts of Berlin are totally pasted over with anti war and anti-american posters.

Threats to property, interesting for a "peace activist" to write
by Bart
Saturday, Mar. 15, 2003 at 5:47 AM
Found it interesting that a "peace activist" would write threats about property and pursuit of happiness. Might have to print this out, and save it for your bail hearing, eh? Wasn't there a document, somewhere, about, "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"? Seems, that one's interest in their neighborhood would come under this clause. Making threats about one's home or neighborhood might violate someone's rights. Hmmm, the headlines won't look good when it's part of the case, would it?
Did anyone contribute to Mook's case, yet?

"Life, liberty, and the pursuit of property"...that's what this is about to you, isn't it. I didn't realize that telephone poles and brick were considered natural landscapes. After cutting down trees, laying down a concrete sidewalk, and erecting a steel pole, how could taping a piece of paper to that pole be considered pollution? Is it because the paper might end up in a dump? Well, that's not the fault of the people who put them up. That's the fault of the people who take them DOWN. Just leave them there, and paste successive layers of posters on top of each other. How is that a more polluted environment than an undecorated lightpost?

Reports from the underground indicate that this past winter was especially difficult on the roach population. There was a severe shortage of wheat paste, due to the extreme cold. Seems the mixture was in short supply because of freezing conditions. They are requesting that all supplies of wheat paste be made available to them so that they might survive. It is one of their main food sources. Usually it is found on the back of posters mounted by sympathizers of Saddam's ruthless dictatorship. Remember him, he authorized his military using nerve gas on his Kurdish population, 15 years ago, today. It's a not so nice anniversary for the Kurds. Of course, the world is supposed to forgive him for this, according to the posters.
Give peace a real chance,..... support our troops. They are the ones who liberated many people in the last World War, and they'll do it this time, to. Down with the Vichy sympathizers, everywhere. Let them eat wheat paste! - Bart

Well, I guess TeamsterTurtle missed the historical factoid in my message. Saddam used NERVE Gas on his own people, 15 years ago, yesterday. That and the fact that he continues financing suicide/homicide bombings against CIVILIAN targets in Isreal are ignored in Turtule's "let's kill the messenger" musings.
I thought, the Ostrich was the only one who hid their head in the sand when faced with danger, seems the Turtle has, also. Let's face it, the UN and The International Courts have failed to reign in this source of terrorism. Now, the likes of GW and Tony Blair are standing up to him. I'm not a GW or Tony Blair fan, but someone has to stop this madman. I hate to see a military solution to the problem, but Saddam and the UN have failed in a peaceful solution. I see NO alternative, that, has worked or is working.

You won't hear about real news like this because of the events like the Bilderberg meetings which are exempt from press coverage. Look it Up. Do the Research. The Global, International Financial Elite cartel / elite control politics and wall street.
The Federal Reserve IS NOT A GOVERNMENT ENTITY! IT IS A PRIVATE INTERNATIONALLY OWNED MONOPOLY THAT SUBVERTS THE CONSTITUTION. It prints the money for the government and charges for it's usage. The VAST MAJORITY OF TAX DOLLARS GO TO PAY THE privately owned federal reserve banks bill. The tax dollars go into the pockets of international banking cartels. Check it out. Do The RESEARCH.
IT is they who manipulate politics, foreign policy, own the media conglomorate holding companies, construction, and military industries.
Check it out. Get Wise.
THEN SPREAD THE KNOWLEDGE. IN HUGE LETTERS FOR THE WORLD TO SEE.
Forget the Politics.
The Real Problem is to be found above that. About 3 layers above politics.

Iraqis shooting POWs in forehead

Seems the Vichy's hero, Saddam Hussein, has approved shooting prisoners in the head, after capturing them and blocking ports that are to be used for humanitarian aid shipments. Nice guy, eh?
It's time we change our tactics to theirs, TAKE NO PRISONERS, Alive! The only way to win a war; adopt the enemies tactics. Ask the Brits, who came to the colonies in bright red jackets and square formations, to fight in the woods.
No anti-war demonstrations, in Iraq. Why?
The "only way" ??

"But then again, we have no other way of getting our message across"
I thought that the RALLYS and the BLOCKING OF TRAFFIC, etc were "the only ways" you had to get your point across?
So which one is it??
I personally would much rather read a flyer and decide for myself than to be forced to sit in traffic for an extra hour while wannabes block traffic, so I agree! Flyer away!

Hey Bart....
....forget it...you wont be able to get any headway here on this....
You'll be told that "Well, can you blame him for being so cruel? Look at what is being done to his country!"
See, the way it works is that the US is the big bad villain and Iraq is the poor wayward country that only wants to survive.
Uh ....yeah....uh huh.
Regardless of how Sadaams true colors come out over the next weeks, these folks will make him out to be a martyr, who should be left alone to his own devices.
Damn the fact that this guy is doing what he is doing....

"You are right. I know this is all a setup and staged war to take our freedoms away. I have read the same things. Bush and Clinton are cousins!! "
Oh DAYUM! The secret is out!!
Yep, this is all a plot to piss people off, particularly those who fight for "truth justice andt he american way".
What freedoms have you lost so far?? The right to get rowdy in the streets?? Sorry, you never had the "right" to begin with.
Geezuz people....do you read what you type?? Isn't this paranoia a remnant from the 60's??
If you feel like you need to be paranoid about anything, be paranoid about Russia who was planning on selling Sadaam war materials....or China who is working on their own nuclear devices....If they are so "peace loving", why they doing THAT??
Folks, the WORLD doesnt operate in the rose colored fantasy land that some of you seem to.
I love peace and harmony as much as anyone....
But get real.....it doesnt come free, the same as the rights we do have in this country didnt come free.
Try spewing antigovernemnt rhetoric in Iraq, Iran or China and see where it gets ya....

For every flyer he takes down I suggest we post 2 or 3 more! Here are some links to some which have high propaganda value:
