Police Harrasment?
by Brian Tuesday, Apr. 01, 2003 at 12:28 PM

anyone else had this happen?

Has anyone else who was arrested at the M20 demo experienced anything odd that could be considered harrasment? This morning someone called my house at 3am that read as "Blocked Caller" on my caller ID, when I answered I just got a hang up/dial tone type thing(ok, I can't remember the exact noise cause i was asleep). This is the first night it happened but I realy can't think of who would have my home number that would feel any need to harras me, most telemarketing systems would realize that it was 3am and that's illegal(I work with a telemarketing type system as a bill collector and it's against the law to call after 9pm). So I'm lead to strongly believe that this could be the begining of police harrasment. Has anyone else experienced this or am I just paranoid? I double checked my caller ID in the morning when I woke up so I didn't just dream this up.

Um, I'd say you're a bit paranoid. Anyone can block caller ID info (I do, several of my co-workers do) so it was probably just a wrong number. Or someone's cell was in their pocket and accidently dialed you, happens to me all the time.

i'd never thought about it before, but I get 4+ calls a day with no number, that never leave a message, and on the few occasions that I do answer there is just silence and a dialtone

war dialing
by deadrockstar Tuesday, Apr. 01, 2003 at 4:01 PM

One possible cause could be war-dialing (from the movie war games, y'know?) where fax-spam companies have an automated system call random numbers to try and find unlisted fax machines. Maybe the ACJ is selling their phone lists to direct marketers? (That's a joke, btw.)

who knows

Brian - seems a bit early to think the call was anything but an accident. But here's what to do if it happens again. As soon as you hang up, dial *57. Theoretically, each of these calls should then be registered. If there's a pattern of anonymous calls from a particular number then Verizon is supposed to do something about it.
We've been getting 4/5 anon calls a day for the past week but my SO is a known anti-war activist and is in the phone book. Did your name get put out in the media anywhere? I don't think it's police - we hope they have better things to do - I think it's some pro-war person/people with a problem. There seem to be a lot of them out there with a lot of time on their hands (just look at this site). I wouldn't think too much of it even if it does happen again.

I'm on do not call list

I'm on do not call list, so the odds of it being a telemarketer are slim. Cell phones don't come up on caller ID as "Blocked Caller". War dialing would have typicaly resulted in me hearing a modem on the other end. There's only about 8 people who have this number. 2 of which have cell phones. I'm not in the phone book to the best of my knowledge either. I don't think I've had the number since the last book came out. I had a lot of .gov's and .mil's hitting my website for a bit which contained info on guerrilla warfare and self defense tactics. So I don't know, if I hadn't had reason to suspect prior to M20's arrest that I was being monitored in anyway I'd think nothing of it but it just seams weird at this point. I'm going to see if it happesn again tonight.

be careful

Be careful my friend. It may not be harrassment, but it may be surveillance. I recommend lining your hat with aluminium foil--this prevents the gov't from penetrating your thoughts.

Paranoia
by Shappy Thursday, Apr. 03, 2003 at 11:58 AM

You guys, I left a message on this message board the other day and then, when I left the House, I was driving down the road and I noticed that a police car was right behind me. I wonder if they traced my computer ID and were harrassing me!!

Get a frigging life you guys, I get several calls a week where it is a blocked number and no one leaves a message.
