just say no... to yellow ribbons
by jason lynn Thursday, Apr. 03, 2003 at 10:51 AM
aepunk@myway.com new castle

for pittsburgh indymedia: editorialising one person's lack of support for the troops...

Just say no to yellow ribbons.

Let me first say that I have friends in nearly every branch of the US Military and I certainly wish them no harm, nor do I bear ill will towards any individual soldier currently embroiled in this illegal and unjust war of aggression. That, though, goes for all soldiers fighting on either side of the battle lines. This desire to keep safe both soldier and civilian is why I have been against this war, a desire echoed around the globe that was categorically rejected by those in power. Soldiers know the potential result of their decision to enlist. They know, or they should, that they will be trained in the art of murder while simultaneously trading their autonomy to become unquestioning automatons following the orders of those of higher rank if not higher moral fabric. In my mind this makes them willing conspirators in an attempt to slay human beings for the purpose of stealing economic resources, for let it be said once again: this is a war over oil rights desired by greedy corporations, a vendetta by the Bush family and their supporters, and a bid to replace a tool which has passed beyond usefulness. Saddam Hussein was put in power (and armed) by the US the last time "regime change" was needed in Iraq, but has since gotten uppity and is no longer the pawn he was intended to be. Yes, he is a vile dictator; but no more so than any other leader of any other country. At least he won the popular vote in his rigged election. By aligning themselves with these corrupt goals and perpetuating unspeakable acts (by the mere definition of war) "the troops" have divorced themselves from the support of all peace loving people. Should they decide, en masse or individually, to cast down their weapons and fight no more I would cheer them as true patriots and support them in any and every way possible, but I lend neither my aid nor my prayers to murdering puppets of a power hungry regime- no matter whose flag they wrap themselves in. Fight war, not wars. Destroy power, not people.

you ignorant basterd, how dare you,if it wasnt for the POWER of this country and the resolve and bravery of our soldiers, you wouldnt even have the right to express what you just wrote.
from what i guessing from reading your article one can tell that you are just young and dumb and has not experienced enough in life yet,you all say Iraq had no people on board any of the planes on sept.11,i agree with you, but i guess you all must feel it is ok for Iraq to help fund such terrorissm.By the way,SO MANY OF YOU ,cover your faces, i know you will come up with some type of bogus excuse , but what it really comes down to is your embarrassed of yourselves your cowardly, exactly what you want our government and our military to be and for that matter, the MAJORITY of the rest of our country that support our troops!
ive definetly wasted way to much of my time on this, because no matter what anyone says it wont sink in till you get older and live more of a life. in the mean time, i have an idea, join the peace corps, ask to go to a third world country, live there, then come back and tell us you would rather stay in a POWERLESS,poverty stricken country. id be willing to bet you wouldnt last out your tour.while your there write a letter to the government of that country like you just wrote and see what happens,GOODLUCK

Support the rapists?

I hear people say "Since the war has started you need to quit protesting and support the troops". By their logic, if I was unable to prevent my sister from being gang-raped, I should support her assaulters, since the rape is already in progress.

You can't help yourselves, being 2nd generation Red Diaper babies. You've been fed the subliminal communist line since you opened your eyes and saw the hammer and sickle dangling above your crib. you were raised by traitors, sodomites, and whores. you're so brainwashed, you're not even aware of what you are. You project your fears and psychosis onto your betters. Well, they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, however, I reject your sad wannabe attempts at being RP1. You have no logical arguments, so you sink to mockery and mendacity. These are very old communist discrediting tactics against their enemies. However, this enemy knows the tactics.

Yes to Ribbons?
by Phoenix Friday, Apr. 04, 2003 at 5:50 PM

Mr.Yes to Ribbons, if you really think about what you just said, you would realize that it makes no sense. This is your argument: American soldiers have died for you to exercise your precious rights so therefore you should shut up and not use them because people are out there dying for you to use those same rights that you should not use anyways. I really have a lot of trouble following what you mean.
You called us brain washed, but I like to think that I am not. So I will therefore give you an oppurtunity to cahnge my war opinion: Could you please tell me, using only factual evidence, what freedoms the war on Iraq is protecting? If these freedoms are so apparently being threatened why you did not advocate for a war a long time ago? Why other democratic nations are not afraid of losing to their freedom due to Iraq? Lastly, if you are turly for America then why do you do the supremely ant-american action of sterotyping all anti-war people as idiots and fools? If you can provide factual evidence to answer these questions then I suppose I would have to agree with you, if you can't then it only makes logical sense that you are the one who is being brain washed, and you would then have to come to realize that you were being brain washed, therefore forcing you to disagree with your previous thoughts. I will assume that if you do not answer me then you do not really have the answers and are therefore going to become anti-war in light of your new found ignorance,
Peace

dear sir who calls himself "mark",
actually i wouldn't consider myself ignorant in the least, nor would the University that accorded me a bachelors in political philosophy. i honestly doubt that any of the colleges i've taken poli-sci courses in would attatch that particular adjective to my record. i do realize that to you this undoubtedly means i'm a sniveling, whiny college student... after all, no one under the age of 40 could possibly understand the intricacies of international foreign policy, political theory, economics, ethics, history, and the various other disciplines that come into play regarding the issue at hand. With that in mind i won't even address any of this as i obviously have nothing valid to bring to a discussion. BUT, to your suggestion that i flee the country to dole out charity to the unfortunate nations impoverished by the greed of mulitnationals and the oppression of "first world" foreign policies, i say this: hell no. there's too much work to be done shattering illusions of freedom and making America an inhabitable, sustainable, free, and egalitarian society. In case you weren't aware, there are problems here too. Some of us would rather fight for positive change than bury our heads up the anal orifice of the oval office. but what do we know?

You are an idiot. I'm sure that you have reasons to be agains this war. I'm also sure that you enjoy that fact that you can say that outloud without getting beaten, maimed or imprisoned. That said, I can respect the fact that you feel this war is unjust. I don't agree but that's what makes this great nation so very wonderful. It is also fabulous when idiots like you make it apparent that you don't have the common sense God gave a gnat. This war isn't about oil. This war is about not following a treaty in the first place. Had Saddam Hussein done what was asked of him we wouldn't be in the position we are in. He can't follow rules and for that innocents are dying. We must take a stand against this as it will soon be on our soil if we don't. God bless the United States, the innocent People of Iraq, and God bless George Bush.

You know, I really try to be polite with the pro-war contingent who post on this site, but I'm wondering if the parents of that "innocent" dead Iraqi baby whose photo someone posted here yesterday would agree with you on that one Amy? And you say we're ignorant... Geez woman, read the international press and get your head unstuck from the George Will / Thomas Friedman columns and the Republican party war handbook. You might be surprised by the stark contrast between what the US and foreign media are saying. Get a reality check and quit spewing self-righteous bunk. Personally I've seen too many dead and hurt "innocent" people over the past few days to put up with much more of this BS. And it's not over yet.

Idiots??? Hmmm....
by Pheonix Monday, Apr. 07, 2003 at 4:47 PM

Amy,
Before you go off and start calling people idiots you should realize a few simple things. Saddam did not break any treaty, he violated a U.N. sanction: did you know most of America's allies do the same thing every day. Also Amercia attacked him due to an ultimatum(might have misspelled) that the President created.
Further more you said something about on our soil, I infer you mean when Saddam attacks with his army. That would be very interesting, seeing as how far their geological position would force them to travel. Not to mention the state of their navy: I don't think they have one.
When you mentioned our right to free speech what exactly were you implying? I really don't understand the pertinentcy of that comment. Regardless, you really should rethink sterotyping a whole group of people as idiots when you yourself seem to be lacking alot of information and logic. Oh, one last thing: If all anti-war protesters are idiots then America is a rather stupid country because you figure by your reasoning that 29% of the country is populated by idiots.
Peace

Another thought for Amy
by Pheonix Monday, Apr. 07, 2003 at 4:51 PM

You mentioned Iraq(Saddam) not following the rules, but last time I checked this war flagrantly violates international law, not to mention that America also, via military trade, helps Israel break several U.N. sanctions daily: just like Iraq. Did you not realize this, do you think that America is above the law thus making America a vigilante rouge nation, or are you secretly attempting to adovacate that since Iraq should be sieged for it's illegality that America should be aswell?
Another thing: please refrain from saying that you respect our opinions if you are going to blatantly disrespect them by calling us idiots. You just further your image as a hypocrite.

To redunda: Tony's hair is styled in a "secure undisclosed location", by the same person who does Dick Cheney's and Chemical Ali's. Yes, it is bulletproof. His stylist uses a special ceramic/ polymer hair tonic, affording his head the equivalent protection of a level IV ceramic trauma plate, which will even stop some high-caliber rifle rounds.

Big Justice (It's hard to type with a straight face) could I just have your autograph on a piece of paper? The back of my throat will not fit nicely in a scrapbook.

As far as helmet laws go, I'm of the "let those who ride decide" persuasion. That is an idividual decision. I'm no doctor, but one more wipeout, and you'll be taking to the road in a Stephen Hawkings wheelchair. As a friend, I believe you should save the brain you have left. Austrian army surplus helmets are nice and retail for about $10.

My friends in Red China need you to buy more of their American flags and ribbons, preferably from Wal-Mart, since they need more money to paint a mural of Chairman Mao. That was the real tension over the China-spy plane fiasco. If Red Chinese were holding our boys, where would we get ribbons and flags? Certainly not from France or Iraq.

It smells like your meth is burning, you better go check on it.

BJ
by Phoenix Tuesday, Apr. 08, 2003 at 12:59 AM

Dear Mr.BJ
Firstly and formostly: your name is a little to long to type(call me lazy), so I will just use the initials. Anyways BJ I'm confused by you: you are threatning people with physical violence, and attempting to be intimidating with your biker folk. Well I want to give you a tad bit of good old information: this is a forum on the internet, you cannot physicaly attack people through a computer. I'm just telling you this so you don't do anything you wouldn't want to do: you know like attempt to get us with your biker friends by ramming your motorcycles into the monitor of your computer. I would hate to see you lose your ability to share such intellectualy driven statements.
Also, when you hang your ribbons and fly your flag do you think anyone who is in Iraq actualy sees them. Do you think that the soldiers are filled with hope because some people are flying patriotic(or as it should be called:nationalistic) symbols.
Lastly, I end with a question: what exactly does your son possibly have to gain by fighting in this war? Let's examine the possibilities: Death, bodily injury, coming home and suffering from PTSD, or coming home to normal. None of these choices seem to be very good. So thus again what is your son fighting for? Please don't tell me it's for American freedom, because there is no way of Iraq attacking America, or subjugating our freedom. Don't tell me it's to remove those pesky "weapons of mass destruction" because if Saddam really had the intention of using them without provocation then he would have used them already to protect himself. Don't tell me it's to liberate the Iraqi people because if it were then we would be going to war with the whole lot of our citizen opressing allies. Lastly, please don't tell me it's to for 9/11 because that was done by international terrorists not Saddam, but Osama(I know they sound somewhat alike:Confusing huh). In fact a disgruntled American, or an angry Brit, or a pissed of French Man could have just as easily hijacked a plane(Just because they are Arabic does not make all Arabics teroorists). I don't ask you these things to inflame your anger, or bring you sorrow, but to lead you to question, hopefuly, why people have to die without any clear reason. Please support bringing your son home as soon as possible. Bring him home by not supporting a senseless war.
Peace

Some people feel helpless by knowing that they can't directly protect the brave men and women over seas. It shows support for them and their familes. If you don't support them or this war that is your right, and i will not argue with you about that. Even though it does break my heart to think that their is people who don't support our troops and the freedom they provide for us.
It is pretty sad. God bless our military!

Subtle Little Spider
by Phoenix Wednesday, Apr. 09, 2003 at 11:13 PM

Mrs.Jones,
You say that you will not argue my opinion on supporting troops and the such, but sadly you attempt to provoke me into an answer. Why? Do you want to make me look like an ass for replying to what you say: by saying I don't want to argue an argument would make me appear as the aggressor. Or did you not realize that saying how people like me break your heart and that it is sad that we hold such opinions is considered to be expressing your opinion in an argumentitive fashion.
You also said that our soldiers are brave, but how brave must you be to drop a bomb from a plane? How brave must you be to fight malnurished and under equipped soldiers with the best army in the world? How brave must you be to kill civilians? How brave must you be to hit a media center with a tank shell, kill international media, and then go against spokes people from very credible news agencies by saying that you saw snipers even though hundreds of credible others did not? Are these the actions of the brave? When you say brave you make it seem that you consider them heroes, but did you know that they are just following orders?
Now this is not to say that want American soldiers to die: I don't. In fact, unlike you, I really support the troops: I want to bring them home before anymore die, and don't try to say I'm putting a spin on things because you are the one advocating that our soldiers should be killed.
By the way, do you know that not ever single American war has something to do with defending American freedoms? Saddam is not a threat to our freedom, please realize that, and If he was such a threat then why did you not advocate to have a war a long time ago? Perhaps you have never looked at a map either, because Iraq's geographical position, aswell as the current state of it's military prevent it from attacking the U.S.: not to mention that even if they could they would surely lose. Perhaps I am misinteperting you and what you really mean is that the men our fighting for our freedom by getting rid of Saddam so Rumsfeld and others can no longer spin things off the ignorants fears and pass patriot act sequels.
Lastly, did you know that we spent less money on investigating 9/11 then we did on Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clintons relationship? So, I conclude with my final question: if America's goverment is so very concerned with terrorists, to the point of preemptive wars, then why not spend more money investigating the events of 9/11? Oh, almost forgot one more question: What ever happened to Bin Laden? No one seems to care about him anymore, and why not? Because 44% of the nation think that Saddam Hussein is Osama Bin Laden, guess that shows how intelligent the American pro-war folk are. So go on support war, and when political destabilization in the middle east due to the Iraq war leads to another 9/11 write and tell george bush thanks, and then fly some more flags and ribbons. Hey maybe then you could advocate for another war against another country to cause the same thing. Why you could even just keep on continuing the cycle until millions of Americans are dead, I mean that is what the patriotism of the ignorant means.
Peace
Love
Harmony
