Black-clad thugs with guns block Oakland streets

270 marched peacefully through Oakland

Black-clad thugs wit...
march-3.jpg, image/jpeg, 640x480

At least 270 silent marchers brought their anti-war message to the sidewalks of Oakland today, bearing coffins and many wearing masks in solidarity with the Pittsburgh 122. Although campaigners marched on the sidewalk peacefully and quietly, dozens of police officers in riot gear and bearing billy clubs and guns stood by. They were prepared with at least two paddy-wagons and blocked traffic along the route gratuitously.

He saved a whole village as the viet-cong was attacking women and children for protest the communist goverment. Whoever you are that is talking about Navy Seals and the army, and giving lives so we can protest, I ask you this if he went a gave his life for our freedoms, then could you tell me why I should not exercise them. Your logic: He fought for your freedom of speech therefore don't use it if he dosen't seem to agree, or it adresses grievences against the goverment like it is supposesd to, you know because...ah....he is a war hero. That is blatantly un-american. By the way not every single American war is to protect American free speech. If you think it is then you must believe all sorts of crazy things from thrid grade. Vietnam did not protect any American freedoms, the Vietnamese were not even trying to attack or subjugate America. Also, even if he was fighting to protect the Vietnamese this does not mean that it was his intention, it was the intention of the military that sent him there, but I doubt they were worried about frredoms of the Vietnamese. I mean unless you consider using napalm on whole villages indiscriminantly without clear reason, and the use of chemical weapons to be for the good of the Vietnamese. In conclusion this officer got shot in a war that had nothing to do with American's free speech and this wound he took was at the behest of his commanders, thus this man was following orders and got shot in a war that utilized reprhensible and abhorrent tactics. Think I''m wrong? Please logicly and rationaly tell me why,
Peace

vets and war
by redundadabed? Sunday, Apr. 06, 2003 at 12:31 PM

If this cop is really a Vietnam Vet then I can kind of understand that look on his face 'cos it seems to me that Vietnam vets have two understandably polarized reactions to war:

- total active support (this war has to be right because if it isn't right then that means that vietnam may not have been everything they told us it was therefore my buddies who got killed, lost their legs, lost their minds... were all just pawns in a deceitful game and so was I and it was all a total waste and nothing to do with freedom of speech [that's 'speech' not 'speach' BTW can we take note of this, it's kind of an important concept to spell wrong?] or democracy or whatever it was I needed to believe it was).

- total active opposition (I know where this is all at, I know we were screwed in Vietnam, I don't want anyone else to go through what I did and see what I saw and kill like I had to kill for nothing but a politicians' game of international Monopoly).

The reason many pro-war people, not just Vets, feel so virulently against us is that we knock at that little door in their minds that says "hey, um, uh, ya know, maybe they're right, maybe W & friends are lying, maybe this war is all a big scam and a waste of life..." and they don't want to hear it, they just don't, because it would mess up everything they think they stand for, often with genuinely pure intentions. It's never too late though, it's never too late... And we need to remember that when people get mad - sometimes it's because they're fighting back doubts that they can't afford to have.

The ones sprayed on the street: it was only a minor incident, he sprayed for around a second and people headed off the street.

on the sidewalk, where EVERYONE was at that point, he pointed into the crowd, sprayed everyone he say, then lept into the crowd with fists a fury... _THEN_ he attempted to make an arrest. After the gassing, after th punching.

I know this guys cousin, she says he's bad news and used to go looking for fights, apparently as a youth he used to get arested a lot for stealing TV's.

I know plenty of folks who were on the sidewalk, including two attorneys, who were gassed by that 40 gallon lawn garbage bag filled with liposuction by-products. Even the news footage makes that plain to see.
Just another whiny swine lie, like the hallucinatory batteries and rocks. How could someone make such an asinine statement, about such a well documented incident? These are the lies of a four-year-old.

The crowd should have dispersed. If the crowd was dispersing and the cop sprayed someone even if they were cooperating, go to court and file charges and stand up for your rights instead of whining all over the net....

the courts don't help, they don't give a shit about justice. Most who were on Braddock ave. that day were also downtown on M20. And were waiting for the cops to figure their shit out.

Also i don't remember tuffcop or anyone else giving a disburse order, they just wanted us on the sidewalk, so we had no reason to break up. And based on the events of M20 people were wary of continuing moving, because that's when the cops stuck that night. SO people were on the sidewalk, waiting for the next move, and tuffcop did a berzerker.

hope you were also remembering thousands of Iraqi's killed by Saddam
by OG Readmore Monday, Apr. 21, 2003 at 4:06 PM

Yes, civilians dying because of bombs is the most horrible aspect of war, however would you rather a murderous tyrant stay in power and have his reign of terror continue over his own people? Most of those who read IndyMedia are fans of autonomy - how much autonomy were the people of Iraq given under Saddam? Why weren't you all protesting about human rights attrocities under Saddam over the last decade and for you old schoolers, the last 3 decades? I know I know "but the U.S. supported Saddam 30 years ago" - so why didn't you protest the U.S. supporting a murderer? and I know I know "but sanctions killed 500,000 Iraqi children.... Everyone understands how terrible economic sanctions are on a population especially when a tyrant keeps the money from the oil for food program for himself, but the UN, who everyone seems to hold in such high esteem (continued weapons inspections/security council resolutions etc.), supported the sanctions. And Russia and France, who people love to treat as sacrosanct for their anti-war stance, still don't want the Oil for Food program (sanctions) to end. You know why? Because they had their grubby hands in Iraq's oil fields and make money off the status quo.

Although there is not yet a third party estimate of how many Iraqi civilians were killed or maimed due to US/UK bombs, I'm 100% positive that number doesn't even come close to how many Iraqi citizens Saddam Hussein had murdered/raped/maimed/tortured. It's time for the left to start realizing what the real attrocities in the world are. Yes, the U.S. is to blame for some shitty things that go on in this world, I will never argue that that isn't the case, but sometimes you have to think about what the greater evil is. In this case, it was Saddam, not the U.S.

So next time you remember Iraqi innocents who died at the hands of U.S/U.K. bombs (which again, I agree is horrible) please also remember the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Iraqi innocents who died at the hands of Saddam.

Why do you think most of us hold France and Russia as angelic like countries because of their anti-war stance? I sure as hell don't! I realize that the govts of those countries have their own greedy little agendas. All politicians do! That's why I am against this war. The US did not enter this war to free the Iraqis. Thats total bullshit But most people buy this bullshit and stick their US flags and "Support our Troops" signs up and get their hard ons.
But I also see that most of the CITIZENS of the international world are opposed to the war because they see the big picture. The citizens of other industrialized nations are more educated than the Americans. They also have a more complete history lesson because there's probably don't leave out the nasty little details of American hypocrisy and destruction. (But I am sure they don't get to see the bad picture of their own country's evil doings). Thats why they aren't fooled by "Operation Iraqi Freedom" and we shouldn't be either just because we live in the US.
I have one more thing to say: Yes, Saddam should be ousted from power--but he should not have been put in power in the first place (by the US). If he was such a problem to the US govt (and no, the US govt did not care about the plight of the Iraqi citizens) then the US should have got him out of power YEARS ago, maybe even 12 years ago in the Gulf war. And why can't the US/Britain send in some agents to capture or kill Saddam since he was such an evil man? I don't see the reason for a big fucking war costing billions of dollars killing many innocent people (Iraqis and coalition soldiers) while millions don't even have healthcare, adequate education, or homes in this rich superpower of the world.
Yes, we should help the Iraqis, but killing them and having a false "Saddam statue topple" show isn't helping them. And neither is putting a permanent American army base in Iraq and having American men control the oil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Iraqis are going to always be poor now. And if you believe that none will be killed or tortured, you are crazy.
I am against this war and the occupation of Iraq by greedy bastards. I will continue to oppose it because I know what is really going on. I think people who support this war are really stupid. I have been tolerant of the patriotism and ignorance for too long now!!

so you're saying that because the US made a mistake in the past, it should not correct its mistake? that's utter lunacy.

I'm glad Saddam and his regime have been removed from power. I'm happy the Iraqi people are free. Now I just hope for the sake of the world a secular, liberal government can come to being over there to stabilize the country and help stabilize the entire region. The Iraqi people might be poor forever, but not nearly as poor as they were under Saddam as he funneled all of the "oil for food" money into his own personal bank account.

Without getting into ideological discussions, I have to give the organizers kudos for a well carried out "protest". In these pictures, I can see a variety of citizens coming out to stand up for their views. I have always posted a "devils advocate" view on these issues, and have made the point that if the marches are carried out like this one, the message can be conveyed much more powerfully and effectively. I am glad I could see the pictures here, since I sure did not see anything on the conventional Pittsburgh media about it.
Concerning the "wild" elements that can cause trouble in ANY large gathering, self-policing can help to a point, but the police officers are there to help control these people and the police need to be tolerated, just in case these "wild elements" get out of your control.
Good Job.

At the end of the year, Pgh was tied for the most homicides ever, but into 2004, other victims that were critically injured from their attacks died. Perhaps we should vent our frustrations not with the police and the budget, but at those who are actually, purposefully breaking up a peaceful demonstration?

Wonder how they would have handled this during WWII? I can't help but to laugh that all you peaceniks would be a lamp shade or a bar of soap or saluting the german flag right now w/ your arm extended..... I also don't get the sense of the ACLU. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for freedom of speech, but the first amendment is a right. People need to realize that I don't exercise my rights of the 2nd and carry guns around locked and loaded. Think!! And, this whole not supporting the police thing? WTF are you thinking? OK, you're right, disband the police and we'll end up like freakin Iraq is now, w/ no cops or ppl to keep order. We all know how chaotic it is over there. Hell, there's little to no "craaaazzzy po-po" over there. Why don't you all just go to Iraq and be human shields for guys trying to shoot at our boys?
