Carnival of Greed on April 26th!
by a pogger Sunday, Apr. 20, 2003 at 11:55 AM

Join POG at high noon on April 26th for a Carnival of Greed in the park on 29th and Penn in the Strip District. The carnival will then proceed into a march to The Regional Re-Convergence in Market Square, proceeding down Penn Ave. -> right on Liberty Ave. at the Greyhound station -> left on Market Street -> Market Square. Come dressed festively and/or greedily!

CALL TO ACTION

Come one, come all to the Carnival of Greed!

Fellow activists, join us in a festival of consumption!

Watch capitalists take over the world with their endless warring and raping of weaker neighbors to corner the market on slave labor!

Correctly guess the number of innocent children who will die tomorrow due to the ravages of DU and the new-and-improved United States' "shock and awe" bombing policy and you could win a kewpie doll the color (yes, you guessed it, everybody's favorite!) of a brand new dollar bill!

Spin our Wheel of Shame and see if you can land on the country the US is going to invade next in order to tighten our grip on the world economy!

Throw a baseball at our stack of Starbucks coffee mugs.. knock them all down and we'll build an entire store in your very own neighborhood!

Be the first to name all brands of over-priced sneakers on the market and what colors they are available in and you could win your very own Malaysian boy to follow you home and MAKE YOU SHOES!

Where can I find this Spectacle of Gluttony, you ask! Why, friends, you are lucky enough to be living in the Capital of Capitalism!! In THE LAND that is the Idol of Imperialism!! The Veteran of Voracity!! Fortunately for you, friends, EVERY DAY is Carnival of Greed Day here in the United States of America, Home of the FREE and land of the BRAVE!!!

But just like we can't have fireworks EVERY DAY like we do on the gloriest of glory days FOURTH OF JULY to honor our great country, nor can we march in the streets to show our love of money and the United States government's wanton desire to crush the entire world into its big, fat, greedy belly. So meet us at the park on 29TH and PENN in the Strip District at HIGH NOON on APRIL 26th! Bring your brightest colors, your festive clothing, your banners, your instruments, your voices, and your ENTHUSIASM and march with us Downtown to Market Square where we can celebrate how beautiful it is that WAR and CAPITALISM go HAND IN HAND!!!!

Let's start a list of people who need rides, who can provide rides...etc...

Well, I could use a ride. I'm from Carnegie.

Stolen Idea
by Officer O'Shea Monday, Apr. 21, 2003 at 6:44 AM

This idea was lifted from "Trigger Happy TV".
People should dress like an Indian Chief, a construction worker, a sailor, and a leatherman. The four costumed individuals should pose for pictures with cops and reunite the Village People! I hope to see lots of great pics of this.

i hope i don't

i hope i don't(see any pictures of that)

haha

The village peopel idea is sweet except if that policeman got angry at you doing that i wouldnt want to be dressed like an indian with a loincloth and headdress only and getting the shit beat out of me by a riot cop

future evidence?
by maryjanie Monday, Apr. 21, 2003 at 9:04 PM

and i'll be there to take pictures of them beating you. they do that a lot more often then what i originally thought. guess all you can look on the bright side and start a photo album.

Loincloth

I have to admit, i have a secret fantasy of being beaten by a cop while i'm wearing only a loincloth, so can i be the Indian? Please? Just kidding, but i think the idea is hysterical. I don't know how well it will go over, though, i guess it will depend on the mood of the cops. We'll just have to wait and see...

I'm from out of town only been to Pittsburgh twice, where can I find directions to this park? I'm also looking for more info on this demo, any plans for a black bloc? Sounds like fun if I can find the place.

permitted?
by joe Thursday, Apr. 24, 2003 at 9:47 PM

Is this march permitted? I saw an ad in the CP and there are 3 other permitted feeder marches to the Thomas Merton Center's Pgh Reg Peace Re-convergence. But I think the carnival of greed sounds great.

permitted.

I looked on the Thomas Merton Center website and they say it's permitted. But I didn't see any legal contact numbers... Anybody have any ideas?

Permit situation
by - Friday, Apr. 25, 2003 at 7:17 PM

POG decided to apply for a permit for the feeder march just like the organizers of the other feeders. To my understanding, permits for ALL the feeder marches were denied by City of Pittsurgh at the zero hour. Apperently, they claimed police presence for all four feeders to happen simultaneously would be to much of a burden to staff, despite the fact these permits were applied for a very long time ago. This seems to put the city in a precarious position, and ALL the aforementioned feeder marches are still going on as planned.

Permits Shermits

I think that its so stupid you need government permission to exercise your freedom of speech. This proves how "free" we all are. Im marching prmit or not and I encourage you all to do the same!

I think it's amazing how little understanding people on here have of what "free speech" is. It's the freedom to say what you want, not the freedom to say it however you want. Marching down a public street puts a strain on the city and it's perfectly reasonable for them to deny you that ability. Just like you can't protest the war on my front lawn without my permission. The city just manages public resources.

Im marching prmit or not and I encourage you all to do the same!

Then when you get arrested I don't want to hear you complaining about your free speech rights being violated. You knew it was unpermitted to march (just like I know it's illegal to yell "fire" in a crowded theater) so you deserve any arrest you get.

Clarification
by wheatpaster Friday, Apr. 25, 2003 at 8:41 PM

Making a comparision between marching unpermitted through PUBLIC streets and demonstrating on some whack right-winger's PRIVATE front lawn are two very different legal scenarios... but I'm not getting into this.

I think the feeder marches plan to proceed peacefully on the sidewalk, police know what the situation is. Don't be starting rumors about mass arrests, yall. :) :) :) I don't see any reason for people not to show up to all four peaceful feeder marches because of this. The reconvergence is about ending U.S. Imperialism in the Middle East, not in opposition to the City of Pittsburgh giving the peace movement the shaft. Let's keep the message as such.

I totally agree, however, that the denial of permits is questionable.

city paper
by j Friday, Apr. 25, 2003 at 9:19 PM

The city paper says that the feeder marches (north side, southside, and hill/eastside) are PERMITTED. What's going on here?
