for Pittsburgh Indymedia--Oliver North speaks in Pittsburgh.
Oliver North will be speaking at the Omni William Penn for a Founder's Day Reception/Dinner Proceeds benefiting St. Barnabas Charitable Foundation Free Care Fund. Below are a couple of links, one for a little history on the Iran-Contra scandal and North's role in it , the other a biography of the criminal. The fair article also points out how Elliot Abrams, John Negroponte, and Otto Reich, convicted criminals after the scandal, are now Bush's cabinet members. In 1989, North was convicted by a federal grand jury of "obstructing a congressional inquiry, destroying and falsifying Security Council documents, and accepting an illegal gratuity" Unfortunately, the priviledged, like Mr. North, in 1991this conviction was reversed on a technicality. Wanna let Mr. North know that there are people in Pittsburgh who haven't forgotten still don't tolerate his crimes?

NOT A FELON

See previous posts. Oliver North's entire legal proceeding, from indictment to conviction, was VACATED. That means it never happened according to the court. That means not only isn't he a felon, he was never even charged with a felony. His NCIC sheet is CLEAN, as the cops say.

Whatever the findings of a court is irrelavant. Courts always side with the wholesale thugs representing the desires of Power.
The facts are, North utilized a sleazy relationship with an authoritarian theocratic regime to support a brutal subverson of the twice-democratically elected government of Nicaragua. North is one of the prime conspirators (the main ones being Reagan and Bush Sr.) in the murder of tens of thousands in Nicaragua.
Everyone come out and express your outrage!

But you're wrong. Ollie has every one of his civil rights. He was never arrested, never accused, never had a blemish. Look up VACATED.
Ollie stopped Sandinismo, and the Boland Amendment was unconstitutional. He drove a stake through the heart of Communism in Western Hemisphere. Thank you Oliver North.

Where to gather?

I propose gathering at the William Penn way side of the building. Mellon Square (the park with all the fountains) is located right across from the Wm. Penn hotel.
Any ideas?
....and yinzer, you clearly can't deny that the Sandinistas were democratically elected having won two internationally certified elections after deposing of the awful thug Somoza with minimal boloodshed - their first act being abolition of the death penalty?
You also can't deny that, in the name of a pathological, obsessive hate of an economic system based Christ's teachings, many tens of thousands were murdered in Central America, most merely for the way they voted or for trying to oganize a union.
Furthermore, you can't deny that under your preferred economic system, Nicaragua and it's neighbors have become among the most desparately poor nations in the world.

Sure, I would like to show Oliver North how much we UNwelcome him for all the blood on his hands and the drugs he brought into the US inner cities to keep poor people where they are---dependent on the system.

The Truth about Oliver
by Itwasntvacated

Here is the truth about Oliver North:
North was convicted in 1989 of three federal crimes: aiding in the obstruction of Congress, accepting illegal gratuities and destroying documents related to arms sales to Iran to finance the contra war. He was fined $150,000 and sentenced to 1,200 hours of community service.
Nothing was "vacated". He really was found guilty of serious crimes. The Reagan administration used national security concerns to prevent evidence from being used in court. North appealed all three convictions on many grounds. The supreme court (Willaim Rehnquist) was involved. Interestingly, Ken Starr was also involved in blocking further trials.
Here is a link to the official independent prosecutor's official report:

Oliver North is at least as guilty as O.J. Simpson.

..from 5:30 to 6:15. I saw no one except some possible undercover cops. (I was the one wth the rolled up orange posters.
At any rate, it was good there was no turnout. Ollie didn't show up. Reagan's Sec. of State Alexander Haig (he must be 90 yrs old) spoke there instead.

Reporting?

All the local media outlets were still reporting that Ollie was coming. It seemed like a safe bet that he was happily reliving his salad days playing marine. It's slightly more honest than the deserter in chief posing for pictures with genuine enlisted folks.

Reasor's Grocery, a local food chain is sponsoring Lt. Col. Oliver North to lead "A Rally for America!" May 31, 2003, Oral Roberts University, in Tulsa, OK.
Now isn't that a shame that such a "great patriot" is reduced to leading rallies for a local grocery chain?
Next thing you know, he'll be teeing off with O.J.
The last time Reagan was elected, I tore up my voter's registration and I haven't voted since.
