About 500-700 participated in the rally for peace and march today. Both events were organized by the Thomas Merton Center Anti-War Committee, with feeder marches sponsored by the Pittsburgh Organizing Group, Blacks United Against the War, and a group calling itself the North Side Concerened Residents.

Notable events during the rally included singing by the Radical Cheerleaders and the Raging Grannies and the Carnival of Greed, put together by the Pittsburgh Organizing Group.

you call this a protest?
by anotherapatheticamerican Monday, Apr. 28, 2003 at 10:09 PM

I can't understand how anyone calls this a "sweet" rally. As far as my understanding of what the ultimate goal of the anti-war movement is (stop war) This in no way brought it any closer. If the goal of the anti-war movement is to have an excuse to boost your ego and feel good about the fact that while you may drive an SUV you do wear birkenstocks and voted for Gore, (but you really wantd to vote for Nader) then it was a success. It was "sweet" in that no one who attended the event had to be inconvenienced to do it, no one had to display any real passion, and this is sweet because I think there were few there who could have.

These are some of the reasons I feel this way. There was no real variety of tactics. Did what happened to the Pitt 122 scare the rest of you that much? I thought the carnival of greed was a good idea, but lacked the organization to make it happen well.

For something that took months of organizing, I found the websites to be very inadequate, lacking info on the routes of the feeder marches, legal contact info, and street medics for the march. I was, however, impressed with the large ACLU bloc at the march. if you took away the socialist agenda-pushers, cops, and the ACLU, there wouldn't be anyone left.

The speakers definitely were bland, most seemed to be pushing their own agenda. Is this a failure on the organizers part for not inviting better speakers or the community's part for not producing them? why was there not better media coverage? I saw many cameras there, butthose that run the papers will only print what they want to or what demands their attention. I'd say that that's an argument for more direct action.

As far as chants go, I couldn't keep myself from screaming "this is what hipocrisy looks like!" , "I wish I knew what democracy looked like!" and, "this is what beaureacracy looks like!" just to keep from having to hear that pathetic slogan one more time.

No, I don't think the march or rally was a success, but I do think that I am as much to blame as anyone else who did or didn't attend. If I wanted more of the things that I believe should be happening within the anti-war movement to happen, I should have made them happen.

P.S. Did anyone at least meet new people/network with other groups? The only thing that I felt good about my entire trip to Pitt was meeting the Food Not Bombs kids and dumpster scoring some veggies. Oh, yeah, and staring at that cute girl in the skirt. whatthefuck? Are anti-war protests the new meat market for the hip left?

THIS WAS QUITE POSSIBLY THE GREATEST WASTE OF TIME
by Tim Voning Tuesday, Apr. 29, 2003 at 11:08 AM

I think the GDP of the entire country was drawn down by the negative productivity of this rally. Why the hell did anyone bother. There was no mesage. There wsa no purpse. Other thna to spend the day adn a lot of energy talking to ourselves. So we played hackysack. We made sophmoric jokes about the President. We saw some homely chicks in bad make up trying to lead cheers. What a total waste of time. Clearly everyone had nothing better to do. ANd you expect the world to take fopreign policy advice from this group.

by Marvin Gaye Tuesday, Apr. 29, 2003 at 5:21 PM

Lets just all admit it: organizers are sexy. The organizer wearing the skirt? DAMN sexy. I encourage everyone to be a sexy organizer and start organizing against US Imperialism, then maybe YOU will get some love from teacozy as well. Radical Cheerleaders = "homely chicks"? Don't believe it for a second, baby. By the way, it aint cool to use someone elses name as your screen name, you can be sued for libel. Tim Vining does have a law degree. :-)

Will the Fucker accept the challenge?
by Uneducated Activist Tuesday, May. 13, 2003 at 7:36 PM

Hey Fucker, I've got a contest a big man such as yourself will surely take on. Lets test your theory of all of us activists being so uneducated. I mean, you and your supporters seem pretty sure that we're all so uneducated that any sort of competition would simply be a push over for you. I can tell that English is not your forte by your posts, so how about some math? Warm up with some simple algebra and geometry... You know, work our way up through the system until we hit applied differential equations or something. Or until one of us can't hang. No? Not a math/science person either? We can surely find some test of education to square off over. Maybe a best of three contest or something... That way we can each test something within our own realm of expertise and then have a bit of a tie-breaker if neccessary. Which it won't be. Because you are far smarter and more educated than I.

Bring it on, Fucker.
