Save Our Transit activists will vigil and fast for 25 hours at the State Office Building

Save Our Transit activists along with fellow Port Authority riders will fast and vigil at the State Office Building, 300 Liberty Avenue ( downtown) for 25 hours beginning on Monday, June 23. The vigil will kick off with a press conference and rally at 11AM on Monday the 23rd and finish with another rally at High Noon on Tuesday the 24th of June.

Why a vigil and fast? Because Save Our Transit members say that public transit in Pennsylvania is dying. They say that the Governor and the State General Assembly must adequately fund public transit operations now before it is too late. With this fast and vigil they hope to show state law makers and the Governor just how serious they are about this.

All who care about public transit are invited to attend any or all of this vigil. Stay for an hour, a few hours, or for the whole 25 hours. Its up to the individual. Some will only drink water for these 25 hours but others are encouraged to participate as they want. The only requirement is a desire to be there!

During the vigil participants will be getting a petition to Gov. Rendell signed, they will do human bill boarding, drumming and singing.

Those who can only attend an hour or so of this event are especially asked to come down to State Building for the kick off rally at 11AM Monday (6/23) and /or the closing rally at Noon on Tuesday (6/24).

The Port Authority is required to submitt a balanced operating budget by July 1, 2003. The Port Authority Board of Directors is expected to act on the proposed major service cuts and fare hikes at their June 27 meeting. Time is short.
