Parents, volunteers and citizens are to gather as the storm from the City's Budget hits. We'll have a child focused meeting. If we scatter, we are weak.

Citizens Bring Ideas and Lawn Chairs to Armstrong Park

Mark R., Erik and Randon -- Market House players

Outraged citizens, former employees, recreation professionals, advocates and parents are gathering for an open community meeting at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, August 12 at Armstrong Park. Bring your own lawn chair, paper, pencil and ideas.

Mark Rauterkus, a retired coach and publisher who is a volunteer activist and stay-at-home parent is hoping for a meaningful interaction among concerned interests from all sectors of the community. "We need to gather and make certain that the truth of the matters are not hijacked -- like our Rec Centers and swim pools."

"With our children lives on the line as pawns in Mayor Murphy's hight stakes gambles -- we as parents need to illustrate great care, openness, love and honesty. Furthermore, its parents who have the potential and capacity to fix this city and begin the healing. To gather, vent and work together is essential. The Mayor and his administration has never been able to 'play well with others,'" said Rauterkus.

right wing...

Just wanted to remind people that Mark R. is a right- wing republican. His analysis of things is coming very much from a pro-free market and pro-corporate ideology. Very inconsistent with the politics of a great many people on this board.

Good to know what type of agenda you're supporting.

Hey Mark, does this mean your going to, oh, I don't know, maybe TRY TO RUN FOR MAYOR AGAIN? Is this a campaign ploy. I checked out your web site. You lean to Green and believe in the principles of VIGILANT DISSENT but your a godamn FREEMARKET REPUBLICAN and a Unitarian Universalist. Oh, I get it. You must be related to Howard Dean because you are using his whole campaign strategy. I loved the photo of you in front of the pool which had the really cool link entitled "suitable for press release".

Politics are so fucking slimey.

Gee, isn't that what you wanted to hear, Mark. Is that your plan? I checked out your web site. You lean to green and value the principles of vigialnt dissent but support Unitarian Universalism and you are a freemarket republican. It sounds as though you have read a Howard Dean biography.

Politics are so slimey.

reality bites

Unitarian Universalism is one of the more "liberal" (not exactly a word of honor from me) branches of Christianity -- not radical -- but it sure as hell isn't right wing, and shouldn't be lumped in with free market republicanism (or even neoliberalism).

I think Mark means well with the meeting. He is one of the few people who are actually trying to organize something around these public service cutbacks (even if it is just bougie talk). We should give him credit for calling a meeting, even if we disagree with his politics.

The cutbacks are terrible...

... but according to the Free-Market Republican discourse, Pittsburgh would privatize pools and rec. centers to keep them open. Leaving companies in charge of making that happen is rediculous. Corporations are the ones who take advantage of tax-exemptions and drained the local tax income in the first place.

If the rec. centers and pools were run by collectives within the community, and funded by those living in the community, now we have something!! Kids deserve a place for recreation and swimming in the summer. Write a letter to Mayor Murphy telling him it keeps them away from the spray paint ;-)
