For Pittsburgh Indymedia A benefit concert to support victims of domestic violence will be held at Nick's Fat City on October 8th. Doors open at 7pm and the $5 cover charge will go directly to Womansplace of McKeesport.

What do Grushecky, Schreiber, and Sage have in common? Energizing their audiences with messages of day-to-day survival, self-esteem and empowerment, and the constant need to rise above all that holds you down. These three artists will perform live at Nicks Fat City on Wednesday, October 8 (doors open at 7:00) with the $5 cover charge benefiting victims of domestic violence from the McKeesport based shelter; Womansplace.

Rock-n-Roll Legend Grushecky has been rockin the Burgh since the 70s and is no stranger to Nicks Fat City. Joes latest release, Down the Road Apiece includes songs with Bruce Springsteen recorded live at Nicks, and captures Grushecky at various parts of his career. A special education teacher by day, Grushecky electrifies the clubs at night making appearances at Carhops, The Baltimore House, Station Square, The Club Caf, The Rhythm House, and the Boston Waterfront just to name a few. No matter where Joe goes, its a performance that guarantees pure rock at its best. A must see!!!!

Pittsburgh born singer-songwriter, Julie Schreiber will be making her first appearance at Nicks. Schreiber has a history of involvement with organizations supporting women, including a song on the recent award winning XPose CD, put out by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape titled Im Sorry. XPose is a project of PCAR focusing sexual assault against young women and the need to build self-esteem. Julies CD To Dreaming includes several songs focusing on issues significant to women including the very powerful Miss Susie Something. This is a song about a woman sexually abused as a child who becomes the victim of violence from her husband. Now touring the region with her rock band, the band mixes Schreibers own originals with the best of rock standards from bands like Led Zepplin, Van Halen, Rush, and Janis Joplin.

Rachael Sage, a one of a kind original, reaches her audience with a strong voice that rings with despair, passion, anger, hope and glory, says The Boston Globe. Sage, who runs her own record label, MPress, tours year-round in both the U.S. and Europe. A recent Grand Prize Winner in the 01 John Lennon Songwriting Contest as well as a winner of the Billboard Songwriting and Great American Songwriting Contests, Rachael has toured with Ani DiFranco, Eric Burdon, Melissa Ferrick and played the Lilith Fair with Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega and The Pretenders. She says that maintaining healthy relationships is a perpetual challenge she will never shy away from singing about because most of my songs are ultimately hopefulthey dont arrive at verdicts so much as question how does one rise to the occasion, even if that means learning to just live with imperfection gracefully. Rachael Sage, a founding member of New York City music collective, UrbanMuse, as well as Womanrock and Indiegrrl, will be traveling from New York to join Schreiber and Grushecky for an evening of unforgettable performances and powerful messages.
