North Side: Owner of pit bull wonders why police shot dog
Acticle in yesterdays Post Gazette. Details are not available. Police are not commenting. Something needs to be done. I have filed a couple complaints online and have contacted PETA. Staff writer, Rebekah Scott is encouraging folks to contact the mayors office. I would like to get in touch with the dogs owner and if anyone else has some helpful ideas............

North Side: Owner of pit bull wonders why police shot dog
Monday, October 06, 2003
By Rebekah Scott, Post-Gazette Staff Writer
A K-9 police officer shot a pit bull early yesterday morning on the North Side, claiming that the dog was threatening his canine partner.
But Tom Cooper, the dog's owner who lives on Butterfield Way, says it couldn't have happened that way.
About 2:20 a.m. yesterday, Cooper said he knocked off working on a car in his driveway and went inside his house for a drink.
Pepsi, his year-old black-and-white pit bull, was standing at an open gate at the end of the driveway, looking out on Redour Street.
"I heard a gunshot, and a yelp," Cooper said. "I ran out in the driveway, and there she was laying, all bloody on her side."
Cooper said the street was full of police cars and patrolmen, including several city Housing Authority officers.
"Who shot my dog?" he said he shouted at them.
"And one guy comes pushing through and says, 'I shot your dog. It's a pit bull. Those dogs are vicious.' Pepsi never bit anyone. She might've barked at him, but she wouldn't leave the yard. She was shot for no reason. Maybe he was a rookie, maybe he was showing off for all those other cops."
Cooper took the wounded dog to an emergency veterinarian in Shaler, where she was euthanized at 4 a.m.
Yesterday afternoon, police officers at the North Side station made howling noises as an officer produced a report about the incident. Police would not provide any details about the shooting.
The Coopers buried their dog in a narrow garden, a yard or two from where she fell.
"We haven't told the kids yet, but the 3-year-old, I think she knows," Cooper said.

Any word on what happened with this? It really pisses me off, i have a pit bull and she is about as gentle as my goldfish. People still act like she's vicious, i've even gotten hate mail over her. I am so sick of people demonizing this breed, and when cops do it it makes the situation even worse.

I got an email back from the mayors office stating that the Chief of Police and Zone ! Commander were "looking into it" and no other ifo was available. Big suprise. I was trying to look the owner up online to no avail. I also contacted PETA and a couple other groups.
I feel you on Pitbull ownership - I have a Rottie - same deal. Pitbullls and Rottweilers have long been demonized by the media and folks in general. I guess everyone has forgotten about the loveable Spuds McKenzie. To make things worse the cop who shot the pitbull was a K9 cop.
You have received hate mail about what breed of dog you own? That is completely obsurd.

I'm convinced cops use situations like this to fire their weapons/pepper spray with little or no expected backlash for their actions. I'm always careful when I walk past cops with my dogs.

It was reported by the officer that the dog was making fun of him, and goose-stepping acorss the driveway. Then the dog was making "oinking" noises, implying that the officer and his K-9 partner were nothing more than pigs.
The K-9 officers' dog-partner began barking in a humiliating way at the pit-bull, telling it to back down, or he would be roughed up. The german shepard police dog used doggie-derogatory epithets in the warning.
It was reported by witnesses at the scene that the slain pit-bull was found to have "kibble-estacy" hidden in the collar. It is an allegation that the K-Est was a plant.

Wow,
That was the funniest thing I've ever read. Seriously. Wait. No it wasn't. Sir, I would advise you not to attempt humor again, or I'm going to become angry. I mean, your last post was beyond unfunny. What is the opposite of amusement? Annoyance? Befuddlement? Despair? Yes, I like that. Your post caused me great despair. If you are going to try to be funny in the future, please stay away from satire and stick with things that you can relate to better (i.e. small penis jokes)

I wonder if that bastard cop would like it if I shot him for being a pile of sorry shit. People love to start drama over bully breeds. I'm so sick of people downing Pit bulls. I have 2 of my own and my fiance has 2. His were bought from fighting stock and don't like other dogs of the other sex but they don't show people aggression unless you get in their damn pen. My two are utterly harmless to anything but chew toys. They are from strictly family raised dogs and good breeding. These dog regulations are ridiculous. You don't see little poodles and cocker spaniels being banned when they're the ones who always want to bite. Dog owners should be responsible and others should grow a heart.

...consequenses of keeping a breed of dog that, when not trained in a highly disciplined manner, can act in a very unpredictable manner. It's is too damn bad that the mans' dog was shot and killed, for being a threat. It was a threat and it had to be killed. Since the owned felt it necessary to his manhood to own such a breed to enhance his manhood, he must accept the death of the dog when it threatens others, especially people with guns. What would happen if the dog killed or mangled a child. I am sure he would "feel terrible" and wouldn't "understand why the dog did it". That is the same old line that these owners give to the media when their dangerous breeds do this. The fact is, most of these people do not understand these breeds enough to properly care for them. It's the owners fault that the dog was shot, not the police officers. Too friggen bad.

That you are a complete fucking wanker, George.
First and foremost, your comment that a "breed of dog that, when not trained in a highly disciplined manner, can act in a very unpredictable manner" is such utter shite, it is unbelievable. I realize the only Pitbull you have ever come in contact was the logo on a Red Dog can but to make such a statement is ludicrous. Pitbulls are probably the friendliest, most loving dogs out there. (I can make this comment because I have been around the breed since a young child and have lived to tell the tale.) I am sure this is why the owner had a Pitbull, if you actually read the article it states the owner has a 3 year old child who was obviously so attached to the family dog, combined with the turmoils of being three (which I'm sure you can relate to) that the parents were afraid to break the news to her.
Since the owned (i think you meant owner) felt it necessary to his manhood to own such a breed to enhance his manhood, he must accept the death of the dog when it threatens others, especially people with guns. Listen, you stupid fuck, when did the article mention the PIGS were threatened? When did it say the dog mangled a small child? The fact is: you watch way too much television and your tiny little mind has been convinced by Fox that Pitbulls are a dangerous breed running the streets, slaughtering anyone who gets in their path - THAT'S WHAT'S REALLY TOO FRIGGIN BAD

Okay George, what exactly are the consequences of owning a pit bull? Please enlighten me, because i own one and so far the only consequences i've had have been affection and devotion. My dog is gentle with the neighborhood children, in fact they all love her and come over in my yard when she's out just to play with her. Do you have any factual basis for your statements? Anybody who knows anything about dogs knows that the biggest factor in their behaviour is how they are raised. While all dogs have individual personalities and temperments, all of them, with very few exceptions, can be raised to be gentle pets. And as for the owners enhancing their manhood, what do you think about female pit bull owners? I know several. I didn't get my dog to enhance my manhood, i didn't even pick the breed, i rescued mine from an abusive owner. The biggest problems with pit bulls are owners who raise them to be vicous fighting dogs, and ignorant people like yourself who do not recognize this problem. Learn the facts and stop being an ass. Or i'll sick my dog on you.

Part of what George says is true. I had a pit for 12 years and the only problem around people was that he was TOO affectionate. However, if he came in contact with another male dog there was no sniffing, it was an immediate and horrific attack. Same as cats. I didn't do anything to encourage this, in fact I did all I could to stop it.
To compare a poodle biting someone to a pitbull biting someone shows complete ignorance as to how potentially deadly a pit can be. Sorry, if I'm a cop and a pit bull is running at me, I'm shooting first and asking questions later. (I'm not saying this is what happened, I'm just saying there is no way a cop is going to know whether a pit has been raised a family dog or as a hostile killer).

t, i don't know why your dog was so vicious, but it is an exception to the rule. The fact is that most pit bulls, rotweillers, etc., if raised properly, are no more vicious or aggressive than any other breed. You may have done someting wrong in training your dog, or you may have had an individual dog with a very bad tempermant, but you still can't make a general statement about the particular breed. Every person i know who owns one of these breeds, every single one, without exception, has managed to raise a friendly, loving pet without any aggression whatsoever. If a person had a particularly aggressive golden retriever, would you think there was a problem with goldens? They are certainly large and powerful enough to cause damage if they attack. I have a friend who has just that problem. Her individual dog is mean, however i'm sure you will agree that golden retrievers as a rule are very intellegent, loyal animals. As for the poodle comment, i'm not sure who it was directed to, but it is true that an attack by a pit bull and an attack by a poodle will have very different consequences. Pit bulls are stronger and if they are vicious are going to do a great deal more damage. This still does not mean that the breed is inherently violent. People who own vicious animals, of any breed or species, should be held accountable, and unfortunately, the vicious animal should be destroyed if it attacks another person. Please don't use your one bad experience to demonize a breed of dog that most people find to be loving companions.

The POINT is the K9 cop shot an animal for no reason. This is what's fucked up. You can argue about Pit ownership rights, character flaws, poodles, cats. THE POINT IS AN INNOCENT ANIMAL WAS KILLED and the only person that people want to hold responsible is the owner of the slain dog.

I have two pit bulls (one red nose and one blue nose) and they would not hurt a soul. The police officer should be charged with animal cruelity. He had no reason to shot the dog. Just because he may have a personal reason not to like the breed, gives him no right to kill. I think the owner should file a civil law suit.

I owned a Chow Chow for seven years, and never once has he attacked me, my family or anyone in the neighborhood. One day, I let him take his usual walk. The mailman claims that my dog bit him while he was delivering mail. He had no bite marks on him, so I didn't believe him. It's ashame how people view certain breeds as vicious. Weeks later, my dog was killed by a neighborhood pit bull. I know because I found scars on his body, and I know who's doing the pit bull fights. I'm not angry at the dog for doing this, I'm angry at the owner for creating a dog to want to hurt another dog.

If I hear about another cop, person or whatever shooting a dog, I will shoot the person myself. there are ways to prevent getting attacked.
Don't know then here:
A large dog may lunge for your throat. Protect this area of your body first and foremost with your arm tucked into your throat as far as you can without pulling back.
Punch the dog on the nose as hard as you can. Twist or pull the dog's ears. The dog's eyes are another soft spot which you should attack if required to defend yourself. Another stregy is to kick the dog in the rib cage. This will wind it and could stun it enough to ward off any more attacks. Yell for help.
got it from here http://www.doggroups.com/community/viewtopic.php?p=5482
Byt he way, children dominat the polls with 72% of dog bites. Most of them were unsupervised. Watch ya damn kids all the time.

This is absolutely DISGUSTING! What person, especially a police officer who carries a weapon for a living has the right to shoot an animal without that animal making any threatening moves? Who cares if the dog barked? ALL dogs do that! It's natural! I too own a pittbull and he is so sweet. He's added so much love to our strange family of me, my fiance,a cat and a poodle. And honestly I think the pittbull is the most docile and even tempered of the three. This whole thing with discriminating against animals based on their breed is no better that discriminating against humans due to race or nationality. It's plain disgusting!

I here people saying that their pit bulls are harmless, and I respect that. The pit bull was bred a fighting dog, it's purpose was to fight other animals and to be loyal to it's owner...that's why the pit bull acting in such a way...it's not it's fault. True the breed is infamous for being people aggressive, but the reason they're targeted over other small and nippy dogs is because they are capable of more damage. Oh yeah, fuck that cop for doing that, it was completely uncalled for and he should have his badge taken for wielding his firearm with out reason. Obviously the dog was trained well to stay in it's yard, and it's a shame a police officer would do such a thing.
If the Pit Bull Was A Threat...

I just got back to re-reading this thread. A point that withstands the emotional outbursts is insurmountable: if the officer felt threatened by the Pit Bull, the officer was well within rights to kill the dog. End of discussion. You people cannot second-guess the officers perception of the dog in that situation. End of discussion.
An officer is selected for the police force through rigorous physical and psychological testing, and part of what is tested is the way that they can assess a situation, which is a combination of evaluating the physical environment and also judging the events based on their past experiences. This officer did just that.
You internet Generals can judge all you want, but the officer made a decision, and lives with that decision. The police force and other jobs similar to that need decision-makers who do their best in an instant, whether the decision is to shoot or not shoot a dog, or to enter or not enter a building to save a child.
How many of you have had to make an instantaneous decision like this? One where you had no time to sit back and ponder the possible outcomes?
