Fight Murderous Coke at the SEA Meeting Thursday!!
by A. Wob Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003 at 6:20 PM
pittsburghiww@yahoo.com

Tomorrow morning (11/20) members of the Pittsburgh General Membership Branch of the Industrial Workers of the World will present Pittsburgh’s Sports and Exhibition Authority with a request for disclosure of its contract with Coke.

Murderous Killer Coke has obtained a multi year contract to provide exclusive beverage service in Pittsburgh's new Convention Center.

We will ask members of the authority to express their concern about the murder of trade unionists in Colombia and insist that a Coke representative come to Pittsburgh and address the board on its actions to stop the murders and pay remediation to the families of murdered Coke workers.

The new Convention Center is the place where we welcome visitors from Pittsburgh from all over the world. It is a publicly owned building that must represent the highest standards for accountability and commitment to human rights.

Join us at 9 AM tomorrow morning (please show up a little early) in Room 330 of the new Convention Center. Come and speak to this Authority… they need to hear that our standards are high and that we are united for human dignity and extending our civil liberties from Pittsburgh to the World. Please represent your groups, and your actions and your persistent commitment to building a city that is welcoming and kind and -NOT IN COMPETITION, BUT IN SOLIDARITY- with the the whole wide world.

MORE ON KILLER COKE AND PITTSBURGH…

July 5 2003, Homestead PA

Nearly 40 people converged on the Pump House this afternoon to hear Dan Kovalik, USWA staff attorney talk about cases being brought against Drummond Coal Company and Coca-cola bottlers for colluding with right wing paramilitaries who murder trade unionists. Joel Woller of the Battle of Homestead Foundation told those assembled about the significance of the Pump House site before introducing Dan, “This place is all about the struggle for free speech and free assembly,” he gestures to a window and the Monongahela River behind him, “This is the spot where the Pinkerton guards landed their barges. The first worker to die was shot thru this window.” He went onto explain, “This was a union town… Busting the union with the military was the ultimate violation of these town peoples’ freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. This Pump House will stand as reminder to us and the world that we have these rights and we will protect them.”

Dan Kovalik picked up the historical note by pointing out that the history of Colombia is filled with violence against trade unionists, pointing out that Boston based United Fruit massacred and disappeared more than 100 banana pickers to bust their union in Columbia around the same time as the Battle of Homestead. He went on to describe two of his cases.

On March 12, 2002 two union leaders were on a bus returning from the mine. They had previously requested that the company allow them to spend the night because that they were afraid that paramilitaries would pull the bus over and murder them on the road. The company ignored their request and that is exactly what happened. These two unionists were called by name by the paramilitaries and there is every reason to believe that the company told the paramilitary which bus these workers were on. The worker who stepped into the union leadership after these workers were murdered was killed himself several months later.

Drummond Coal Company is based in Alabama where they used to mine coal until they shut down most of their US operations and opened up in Columbia. Part of The USWA’s interest in the case comes from the handful of Drummond employees still in Alabama and many retirees who have taken an interest in following their work and the workers’ rights violations that went with it. Drummond owns its own railway and port now in Colombia. The current case is being tied in North Alabama District Court on behalf of family members.

The second law suit is against Coca-cola and its Colombian bottlers for a murder that took place on the shop floor when paramilitaries entered a bottling plant on December 5, 1996 after the boss had told the workers the union would be wiped out by the local paramilitaries and that to protect themselves workers should decertify. That is exactly what happened and after the murder was done, the paramilitary came back to force union members to resign at gun point.

In 2002 185 of the 212 unionists killed were killed in Columbia, this year us looking a little better – only half way through and only 35 Columbian unions have been murdered in 2003. Why the decrease? Two possibilities were discussed. First that international attention to these crimes is starting to provide some protection for workers. The AFL-CIO helped bring 30-targeted unionists to the United States for a year to help raise their profiles. The campaign to force Coke out of large institutions like universities seems to getting the bosses attention as well.

The other possible reason for the slow down in killings is a little less inspiring, it is that a critical mass of unionists are already dead and the communities have in fact been sufficiently terrorized. Asked about the left wing paramilitaries and their connection to the drug trade, and the right wing paramilitaries and their relationship to the drug trade and the Columbian military, Kovalik boiled it down, “These groups don’t really fight each other. What they do is they murder civilians. Columbians need protection from all these groups for civil society and labor unions to function.” Kovalik’s talk was followed by a Q and A session and when that was over, the assembled heard the drumming and dancing of (get it from CC) who were able to join us from their home state of New Mexico. They sang praise for the workers at the Battle of Homestead and reminded us that the enemies of working people and indigenous people are most often the same. The pounding drums inspired us all towards the work ahead.

UPDATE: On July 23, 2003 Carlos Barrera, a member of the hospital workers union was killed by a gunman, bringing the number of workers killed this year in Columbia to 45. We will never forget!

I hate Coke too
by USS Liberty Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003 at 6:14 PM

My friend ended up in the emergency room with a coke bottle up his behind. He's going to sue Coke, and I encourage him and all haters of the hegemonic capitalist cola consortium to protest. We should always be a victim. Nothing is ever our fault. We should always bitch and moan and complain and point fingers like little children.

Personally I like jelly jars. Got the idea from rotten.com Have a hankering for potatoes too, cum to think of it!

The industrial Workers of the World is an organization seemingly with a good purpose. They are just another subversive arm of organizations that want handouts while not working. Typical welfare mentality. If they could contract out for something like Coke, you would be damn straight that they would.
Sad bunch of do-nothing people.

Coke is the best drink ever anyways. I don't know what all you lefties have against Coke. You are always complaining about McDonalds. I love McDonalds WITH my Coke. You lefties are too concerned about your health - relax enjoy life - with a big fat Mc Donalds Quarterpounder with cheeze and bacon and lots of mayonaise. And wash it down with a big Coke.

One more thing:
McDonalds also provided me with many, many Beanie Babies, which are more than a hobby; they're an investment.
You lefties wouldn't understand the joys of capitalism, but I will be provided for when mommy dies because of wise investments such as my Beanies.

Coke stuff
by Overalls Brigade Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003 at 3:59 PM

One would think George K. had something useful to say with all these posts, but, alas, we are left with sound and fury, signifying nothing.

A brief update on the SEA meeting. The scoundrels changed the time of the meeting. Something which has occurred before. They'd do anything to not have to deal with the Wobblies. We are a pain in their ass, and they deserve it. From free speech and sweat-free clothing at PNC Park to Killer Coke. We will not let these things go.

We were still there for the meeting in the afternoon, and submitted an information request for the SEA to disclose its contracts with Killer Coke. They were less than pleased with our request.

Not only is this about the unfair labor practices Coke has perpetrated, but it is about corporate welfare, and how government uses working people's money.

For a world without bosses,
O.B.

P.S. The IWW is about organizing *working* and working class people. The bosses are the real parasites.

How old are you, Sam? Do you have any idea what the IWW is?

Do you really and truly want a replay of the USSR?

Do you really want Siberia and sanitariums and standing in line all day for a loaf of stale bread?

Do you want the return of the KGB? (and please, no Pavlovian comments about Ashcroft)

Do you want the return of gulags?

Do you want millions to simply disappear from the planet?

Sam, your kind is knee buckling brilliant. How I want to kill myself most days because I wasn't born an "intellectual"....

"One would think George K. had something useful to say with all these posts, but, alas, we are left with sound and fury, signifying nothing."

judging from yesterday's postings he and his Bushie friends were on their own for the holiday... what does this tell us? these are lonely people who depend on indy media for a sense of identity. they can create personas for themselves and get to feel big spewing a bunch of cliches they pick up on neocon sites.
it's kinda sad and worth reflecting on before getting mad with these guys. i say let 'em spew as much as they like, at least that way they get to let some steam off harmlessly

Leftist "thoughts"
by Gimbles Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at 10:24 AM

One can only marvel and swoon at the Pavlovian hypocrisy of an elitist grade schooler.

Of course, the comment that made me hate my very existence, that almost drove me to the brink of suicide, was the undeniable truth that I was lonely. Yea

Oh woe unto me, not being a member of the Enlightened Ones. You know who I'm talking about, those pathetic souls so terrified of their own shadows that they feel compelled to join collectives? So they can feel a sense of belonging when uttering clichs such as "racist" and "homophobe" and "no blood for oil" and "COINTELPRO" and "tolerance" and "diversity" and "we need more women on golf courses" and "Blame The White Man For Everything" that they absorbed from Communist sites?

sigh It's hard to get upset with them, though, when I realize they're so terrified of existence that they wait in nail biting desperation for the next Jim Jones with a bullhorn to tell them what and how to think.

Clarification
by The Overalls Brigade... Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at 10:27 AM

...does not know the poster known as "Sam."

Also, the Industrial Workers of the World never affiliated with the Comintern and most members were opposed to the Stalinist "workers state" [sic] of the USSR. Members did support the actions of workers councils -- the "soviets" -- in taking over production in their factories. It's ok, George K., you shouldn't be expected to bog your head down with historical facts. Just plow right ahead...

by lonely persona Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at 2:36 PM

Hi, macy. How are you. Are you fine? I hope you are fine. Do you hope I'm fine? That's just fine.

I'm lonely, macy. I need a group to belong to. I have gone through a lot of soul searching, and have come to accept I'm absolutely fucking brain dead, and I now seek others of my kind.

Can you help me, macy? I'm sure that someone as "intellectual" as you has connections. I think what a lonely brain dead bastard like me needs for it's loneliness is something spiritually uplifting. I need to be with people. So can you hook me up with the masturbators for peace? Or the freaks at the Sodom by the Bay who had a "vomit-in"? A couple even shit on the sidewalk in broad daylight. Wow! I think that moving my bowels for a noble cause will enable my deathbed experience to go much smoother.

Please help me, macy. I'm so glad to have met you. You're on the right side. Freepers mean nothing.

I have to go take a tofu enema, but I'll be back. Please write me, you elitist sewage.

Puking for Peace
By Paul Walfield

On March 20, 2003, the San Francisco Chronicle reported the latest fad in peace protesting, the "vomit-in." No kidding. Hundreds of America's leading intellectuals on foreign affairs and terrorism, gathered at the Federal Building on Golden Gate Avenue and blocked its entrances with their bodies and undigested breakfasts.

The brave dissenters to America's military action to remove a mass murderer from power in Iraq showed an even greater solidarity with the Iraqi despot by exhibiting their own brand of chemical and biological attack using digestive juices mixed with half eaten tofu omelets, French Toast and Belgian waffles, to hold off San Francisco's finest who, ill equipped to guard against biological attacks were driven back again and again.

The regurgitations of a few for peace, along with the flying of the Iraqi flag were meant to wake Americans up to the evils "imperialistic America" has become. By resorting to the use of military force when it comes to facing threats to American sovereignty and safety, America makes those folks sick to their stomachs. According to the protesters, flying the Iraqi flag while American soldiers are fighting and risking their lives in the Iraqi desert, is an exercise of the right of free speech, it is an exercise in patriotism.

When it comes to protesting, the vast differences between expressing disapproval of America's right to protect itself and its citizens, as opposed to simply protesting some government policy, gets lost inside the craniums of the Left's elitist intellectuals. However, for San Francisco's elite, the taking of tiny blue pills, even the kind that makes you upchuck, is a cause to celebrate the oneness of us all and the proposition that even if the taking of drugs makes you puke, it can still be a rush if you can trample on the flag and federal workers rights while you indulge.

Apparently, the Left's ability to get their notion of what is good for America was not being accepted by nearly 8 out of 10 Americans. America was hell bent on taking out an evil dictator that threatened America with chemical, biological and would eventually with nuclear weapons. The Left was left in a quandary and the worst kind of all. America's actions would lead to greater sovereignty, standing, power and heaven forbid, nationalism if allowed to continue.

The Left's hopes of an easy win (defeat) at the UN were dashed by a side step and reversal by Secretary of State Colin Powell. He was obviously brainwashed, threatened or paid off by Dick Cheney. There was no way that Mr. Powell loved his country above his citizenship to the world.

The Left also had the problem of the unlikelihood of Saddam beating the United States. They knew he had chemical and biological weapons, but darn those Republicans, they had authorized the money to buy protective suits for the military.

America was in Iraq and the Left's greatest nightmare was coming true. America was not slaughtering the Iraqi children in their beds and America was going to allow the Iraqi people to keep their own oil wells for themselves.

This Republican treachery has to stop.

The left needed to make a statement, an unmistakable statement telling the world what they were about and what America and what American ideals meant to them. they needed to vomit publicly. And so they did.

The Left, the future professors of colleges and ivy league universities all across this great land of ours decided after careful and lengthy discussions that the way to change the course America is taking, the way to show the world how bright they were, is to puke in front of a government office building for peace.

Puking for peace, while not an original idea, Victoria Secret models do it all the time, even when there is no war looming or real, cannot be ignored. While it is easily cleaned up after a demonstration, it tends to leave a bit of itself long after people have been chased off or arrested. It is bound to catch on among everyone who has virtually nothing to say, but cannot be persuaded by facts, logic or reality.

For folks who tend to see differences between people as generally a quantitative thing, meaning with the right education, upbringing and opportunities, differences will disappear and all that is left is opinions that if challenged remain or change depending upon the facts offered. The idea that in the 21st century the "progressives," are vomiting, intentionally and publicly as an expression of their first amendment right of free speech to protest American foreign policy creates a whole new category of, differences.

San Francisco protesters stage a 'vomit in'

URL: sfgate.com/article.cgi?file=/gate/archive/2003/03/20/heaving.DTL

08:41 PST -- In a unique form of opposition, some protesters at the Federal Building staged a "vomit in,'' by heaving on the sidewalks and plaza areas in the back and front of the building to show that the war in Iraq made them sick, according to a spokesman.

Many of the approximately 300 protesters demonstrating at the building at 450 Golden Gate Ave. attempted to block building entrances.

Seven anti-war demonstrators were arrested at mid-morning as they sought to block a group of about 20 federal employees and other visitors seeking to enter the building, Department of Homeland Security spokesman Ron Rogers said.

Rogers said all seven were charged with creating a disturbance and two were additionally charged with resisting arrest.

Only the back entrance of the Federal Building on Turk Street was open this morning. People with business inside the building were required to wait outside and were allowed to pass through metal barricades at intervals. The seven arrests occurred during one of the intervals as federal police officers sought to lead visitors around the metal barricades into the building.

On the Larkin Street side of the building, demonstrators blocked the driveway that leads into a basement garage used by federal judges and other officials who work in the building.

Numerous officers from the Federal Protective Service and San Francisco Police Department, wearing helmets and other riot protection gear, formed lines around the building.
