The East End Community Stand for Peace, a local community organization, is calling upon the generosity of the residents of the City of Pittsburgh to donate much needed canned and other non-perishable foods to help feed those in need this holiday season. The food drive will take place at the corner of Penn and Highland Avenues in East Liberty on Saturday, December 13th, 2003 from Noon until 2:00 PM.
100% of the donations will go directly to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and the Food Bank has graciously promised that a truck will be on-site to receive the goods.
As an acknowledgement of the power of the individual to spread change and hope, the first 200 people who donate will receive a handmade soy-wax candle (while supplies last) crafted by Ms. Moira L. Meadows.
The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank distributes food to over 120,000 individuals in Southwestern Pennsylvania a month. According to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Banks web site, over 36% of the people they help are children aged 17 and under, and 71% of those helped are female. Community donations are lagging behind and demand is increasing. Over one quarter of all children in Pittsburgh alone are in need of food assistance. Aside from food donations, funding for the Food Bank is needed as well. Over $100,000 was cut from this years budget and another $100,000 is slated to be cut from next years budget as well due to Federal program cuts.
The East End Community Stand for Peace is a group of residents from the East End of Pittsburgh working for Peace with Justice in Iraq and the Middle East; Non-violent resolution to conflicts in our Community and World; and Funding for Jobs, Housing, Education, Health and the Welfare of All. The Stand has recently adopted the slogan, Imagine what the World Could Do With $87 Billion to End Hunger Here and Across the Planet.
