"In a time when Iraqis are killed by the thousands.."

What planet are you on man? Maybe the Iraqis where being killed by the thousands before the US had the courage to liberate them and do what the UN has never done for anyone in the world (Rwanda, Burundi, hte Balkans are only a few recent examples).

The occupation as you refer to it is more accurately the liberation. But of course, you want the US troops home fast so that Iraq can deteriorate back into chaos. "Screw the Iraqis" is the battle cry of you "anti-authoritarian/anti-peace activists".

Get a clue dude. The liberation of Iraq was entirely necessary and proper. You marches are now exposed for what they are ... anti-american anti-Bush poitical rallies. You don't care a wit about the human rights violations that the UN and its enabler nations such as France made possible for so long.

I am glad that we are not taking foreign policy advice from you, man.

The war-lovers hold the anti-war dissenters responsible for decades of Saddam tyranny. But how is this so? We are not the ones who armed Saddam to kill Iranians - that was the American government. It was not us who made Saddam a present of golden spurs - that was the grateful Donald Rumsfeld. It was Rumsfeld, as an emissary from Ronald Reagan, who went to Baghdad in 1983, knowing that Iraq was using chemical weapons against the Iranians, and said nothing.

But let's concede that the US and its lickspittle allies are not bad people, merely slow learners. After all, Saddam had systematically exterminated communists in Iraq and you can see how this would confuse the Americans. Even if they suspected Saddam was a crook he was their sort of crook. But eventually the penny dropped and they figured out that Saddam Hussein was a bad man.

Which is the nub of the problem. It is all very well to cheer the downfall of a tyrant, but since when do Americans have an aversion to tyrants? Most of their best friends are tyrants.

Let's see if I've got this right. Saddam Hussein was a bad man and it was worth killing thousands of Iraqis, destroying the country's infrastructure and wasting billions of dollars to catch him down a hole.

But the white supremacist tyranny that brought murder and misery to South Africa for generations was, according to American governments, best dealt with by patience. Did you notice that it was left to the South Africans themselves to sort things out?

What about Pol Pot? The most infamous mass murderer since Hitler was recognised as the legitimate ruler of Cambodia by the US because it was better than conceding that the wily Vietnamese had stepped in just in time to save the last innocent Cambodian from being killed. Best not mention Vietnam.

What about Augusto Pinochet in Chile and the military junta that terrorised Argentina? And the colonels who ruled Greece with an iron fist, to American applause? Or the thugs of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras where dictators are welcome if they protect the investments of American fruit companies? What shall we say about Saudi Arabia?

It is true that if I had my way Saddam Hussein would still be dictator. But that is not the whole story. The US usually deals with tyrants by supporting them or leaving it to their own people to bring them down. What was different about Saddam? Oil? War is neither the only nor the best way to topple tyrants. Every nation in the world, except for four, saw it that way. I'm happy to stand with the 97 per cent majority opinion.

No the "pro-war" crowd does not hold the anti-peace crowd responsible for decades of saddam's reign of terror. They do hold the "anti-liberation" crowd responsible for the immediate show fo support for the despot. It is foolish and intelectually dishonest to claim that because the US, adapting to the geo politics of the 1970's/80's supported Saddam in his war against the Ayatollahs, or that during the 1990's the US deferred tot he UN on these matters, that we should now allow Saddam to continue his human rights violations. You are presented with the opportunity to change that terrible circumstances, and yes, correct some past wrongs by the US and the rest of the international community, and the "anti-war" crowd resoundingly refuses to own up to that task. We do not need to blame your for past world foreign policy failures in the region. We only need to look to the immediate purposes of the "anti-war" crowd. We only need to talk of the conduct of this "movement" in the past two years, and that is ample indictment of this "movement." You look into the face of one of hte worst human rights criminals of our time and you do not take the opportunity to stop his mayhem. Instead, you look at those who are willing to take this responsibility and you direct bile and hatred. THe US indeed has sat by, deferring to the "multinational" institutions to act, as you say we should, and in each case in recent history these institutions have failed the world and the oppressed. Just look around Africa. Even the Balkans. THe UN sat by while the genocide was at its height. Only some crafty circumvention of the UN by NATO delivered what taste of liberation these people have now had. The UN faciliated Saddam's crimes for the past decade. THe US put an end to it.

The UN?
by Old enough to know better Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003 at 12:52 PM

The UN's Iraq body count (via sanctions)far exceeds that of Hussein and both Bushes.

Their refusal to enforce resolutions condemning the nation most in violation of the numerous resolutions can't help the region. Israel does as it wishes.

Your absolutely right. We shoudl do nothing ever anywhere to help anyone anyplace becasue somewhere some governemnt or institution has failed to stop the problem in the past and the US most likely supported the policy that somehow in someway had some dire consequence for someone someplace adn this proves exactly why the US is the great satan and should be stopped befroe George Bush and the Republicans oppress anyone again or allow some country somewhere to escape the heavy-handed enforcemetn of hte UN resolutions that are in place against some other nation someplace.

Your BRILLIANT. Just Fucking brilliant. Why aren't you the Secretary of State or a Director of the United Nations? Please tell me again why all despots in the world shoudl be allowed to exist because no one has acted to stop Isreal and its pupit government in America? It is like poetry when you say it.

Will you also have a ...
by Protest Nut and Quilting Fanatic Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 at 12:21 AM

an anti-regifting campaign and a kazoo brigade? If so, sign me up. I was at a great protest in DC this summer they had a great anti-mean people feeder march with a tiny-cars-full-of-clowns brigade that was just awesome. I would go to your rally, but I don't have a drum. Could we get a quilting brigade, maybe. I know it doesn't make a lot of noise like a drum, but that might be kind of nice. We could talk loudly if you want.
