Bush will be in Pittsburgh this Monday. POG is sending out this call for a Black Bloc/Direct Action cluster to protest his visit
April 19- Protest Bush in Pittsburgh- Call for a Black Bloc/ Direct Action Cluster
On April 19th President Bush is coming to Pittsburgh! He will be here to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars at a senatorial fundraiser and attend a 5:30pm rally taking place inside the David L. Lawrence Convention center. Bush is also coming because he believes that Pennsylvania is a key part of any chance he has for a 2nd term in office. In response to the visit from the ‘killer from Crawford’, POG is calling for a Black Bloc (wearing all black clothing and bandannas)/direct action cluster, of individuals and affinity groups to gather as part of the planned protests. This cluster will begin assembling at: 5:00pm at 10th and Penn Ave. (Downtown Pittsburgh) A plethora of other affinity groups and organizations will be gathering at that same location as part of the Thomas Merton Center’s call to respond.
We categorically reject the man and his message. The ‘killer from Crawford’, and his cronies are not welcome here and we intend to send that message loud and clear. How dare he come to our city, on the verge of complete financial collapse, to raise millions of dollars for proponents of a neo-liberal ideology whose policies have been a major contributing factor to the city’s crisis, while at the same time he continues an increasingly brutal occupation taking the lives hundreds of US soldiers and thousands of Iraqis. Pittsburgh’s share of the “war” cost is estimated to exceed $100 million dollars. How dare he expect the citizens of this region to allow him “free speech” while he is responsible for taking away the rights and silencing the voices of countless millions through an increasingly repressive Government at home, and an increasingly violent and repressive military machine abroad. Those who are responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians are war criminals and should be reviled and treated as such. We are working for the liberation of the people in Iraq AND the United States because all people have a right to justice and self-determination.
The purpose of this demonstration is oppositional. It is not an appeal to higher powers to stop what they are doing. It is an acknowledgement that while this movement doesn’t currently have the strength to stop them we have a responsibility to do everything in our power to make it as difficult as possible for them further their agenda. The protests purpose is to visibly acknowledge what is happening and visibly resist the visit of someone who shares much of the responsibility for the objectionable actions that are occurring.
We wish to put forth to the general progressive community our opinion on what the goals of the overall demonstration should be:
Overall Mobilization goals:
1: Mobilize large numbers of people from a wide breadth of the progessive ideological and tactical spectrum to come together at the same time and place in opposition to Bush’s visit and the continuing occupation of Iraq
2: Make it clear to attendees, spectators, city officials, the media, and the public at large that Bush is not welcome here.
3: Encourage and support a diversity of tactics, and let a diversity of perspectives be heard.
4: Insist that the protest be within SIGHT and SOUND of the convention center and the people who will be attending it. Similarly, oppose any police attempts to put the protest in restrictive “protest pens”, or to keep the protest farther away from the convention center than Bush supporters.
5: Support, with resources, statements, on the ground solidarity, the actions of anyone who attempts to take non-violent direct action, or engages in civil disobedience in protest of Bush’s visit.
Tactical goals:
1: Non-violently disrupt the event as much as possible through the use of non-violent direct action and civil disobedience
2: Oppose any police efforts to target people or single out individuals based on their personal or perceived identity or characteristics.
4: Remain in solidarity with, and support the activities of, those who favor more or less confrontational tactics
5: Be prepared for the possibility of violent police repression by taking whatever personal safety precautions individuals deem necessary
Suggested attire is all black clothing and bandannas. As has been the case in the past, the Pittsburgh police may resort to violence. If so, we intend to meet their violence with equally determined non-violent resistance. We will not be intimidated, we will not accept being caged in protest pens, and we will not be silenced.
In solidarity and resistance,
Pittsburgh Organizing Group
Some people may be asking why POG has chosen to issue a more determined and angry call than usual. This is in fact our first ever call for a black bloc at an event. It is simply a reflection of our revulsion towards the effects of the policies our President is pursuing around the world. We ask anyone to look at pictures from blockaded Fallujah and not recoil in horror at what we, as citizens of this country, share responsibility for. As the atrocities of our government increase so too does our responsibility to resist, for WE ARE complicit in these atrocities. http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/8CB7C17E-F69E-48A2-8034-DEA425192815.htm
Over a thousand Iraqi fighters and non-combat civilians, along with 72 US soldiers have died over the last 2 weeks. Tens of thousands more are dying in the US and around the world because of the exploitative system that this Administration embraces and is beholden to. Our hearts are sick with grief and rage over the almost incomprehensible death, destruction, and duplicity that this Government is engaged in on a daily basis. POG utilizes a variety of tactics that we feel are appropriate to the situation at hand. These decisions are based on what we believe will most effectively achieve our goals. We are not tied to any one approach. If, for whatever reason, you cannot or do not wish to participate in these protests we only ask that you understand where those who do are coming from and extend what solidarity you can. Any comments, suggestions, or requests for dialogue can be directed to pog@mutualaid.org

I'm glad we aren't standing for this protest pen bullshit anymore. Having said that, it's interesting to look at how much things have changed here protest wise in the last 2 years. Just read this article about Bushes labor day visit to Pgh when the threat of war was just starting to loom. http://www.interventionmag.com/cms/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=170

Thoes images of Fallujah are horrifying. Something must be done to stop the terrorist elements in Iraq that want to do this to their own people. Please show up and call upon President Bush to send in more troops or begin doing more to eradicate the Islamist threat to Iraq and the rst of the world. Please, before the Islamist terrorist bring their unholy war to America again.

You Poggers are the one's trying to quell free speech adn diversity of opinion. You do not speak for the people of Pittsburgh, or this region (or even a large minority, or propbaly even any group larger than a short school bus full of hippy miscreants) when you problaim that President Bush is "not welcome here and we intend to send that message loud and clear".
THere are many of us out here who support the President and his stalwart effrots to protect the US and the world. He understands (unlike you) that the role of America is one of immense responsiblity to the world adn the security of civilizations that would be destroyed by oppressive elements such as the Muslim terroists and the Taliban types.
I am making a call for a red, white and blue bloc to show their support (and, unlike you, their faces) for the President on Monday. You Blac Bloc neo-klansmen are free to show up adn speak your mind, but leave your "diversity of tactics" (code for overt threatening and intimidation) at home, or the police may be forced to resort to imposing order (I guess if you cause the problem and are on the receiving end of that deserved knight-stick then you might call it a form of violence. But maybe you should have been a little smarter about your choices in teh matter.).

He isn't your drinking buddy, he's your bosses half-retarded son who keeps getting promoted ahead of you.

Georgie! You're back! Thank you for the encouragement!
We really need more voices like yours to help us through these sickly days. The encouragement and publicity you bring to our fight is invaluable.

However, through quick thinking, our white biotech suit
disguises, and some ridiculously brave unarresting techniques
(including giving cops wedgies and pulling people free from
their grasp) we managed to protect almost everyone from arrest.

"responsibility to the world"

Yup, we cared so much about Rwanda 10 years ago that we stood by and watched it all happen. We cared so much about what Milosevich was doing we waited until the last minute to intervene. This reason-du-jour BS for why we're in Iraq is exhausting. One day it's "Hunt for WMD's", then it's "Operation Iraqi Freedom, then it's "Keep America Safe From Another 911", which is it Mr. Bush? What will the reason be tomorrow when another unknown number of US and Iraqi dead is reported? On Fallujah, weren't we looking for about 50 "insurgents"? Well, why is the "insurgent" body count well above 50 by now? I love the "civilian contractor" BS too, as if they were over there with a hammer and a tool belt to rebuild bombed out homes.
On Rwanda...

On the topic of Rwanda...wasn't it VERY recent that our "friend" Kofi Annan had to embarassingly admit to posession of the black box from the downed plane (i.e. shot down) that STARTED THE CONFLICT IN RWANDA IN THE FIRST PLACE? Can it be that the revered UN made a mistake?

My one concern about protesting Bush's visit is that the ostensible reason for Bush being here is to support Specter's campaign. Given Specter's moderate record, and given the way-far-to-the-right-of-Specter positions espoused by his opponent Toomey, I personally don't want to do anything that may may negatively impact Specter's chances. Seriously, check Specter's voting record and check what Toomey is saying...I find Toomey pretty scary.

umm, polls show that if Toomey wins he will be crushed in the general election so to turn your argument around would you rather have Specter or a democrat? Also, the "pressure" specter is getting from the "right" has only caused him to move in that direction and kow tow to the Bush line even more. Even beyond that the whole notion of these fundraisers should be opposed. The fact Specter is in a tough re-election fight means he needs to raise more money then ever which can only be done through begging the rich who he will be even more subservient to.

In response to concerns regarding the call to wear black and mask up...
I'd like to encourage people to feel free to participate in the black bloc tactics regardless of what they happen to be wearing. There are sound logistical and ideological reasons for wearing black and masking up, but if for whatever reason you disagree, don't think that means you must distance yourself from those participating in the black bloc who are wearing black and masked up.
Anarchist solidarity does not require conformance.
exactly.

I sooo second that.
ANYONE can participate in direct action or support those who do. No matter how you dress you should take actions you feel are necessary. People wearing black are there to support everyone, not just those in the bloc. Solidarity!!!
