Emergency Jail Solidarity: Bush Protest turns into Arrest
by Mark b. Yokim Monday, Apr. 19, 2004 at 4:37 PM
mbyokim@care2.com Pittsburgh, PA

As 200+ gathered to shame a fundrasier for Arlen Spector with his showdog Geroge W. Bush, 6 people end up being arrested for? What charges?

Jail Solidarity will be taking place tonight at the Allegheny County Jail located on 950 Second Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. Those who can stay until the arrested are released are encouraged. Please bring whatever support you can. Food, Blankets, Cushions, Laughter, Determination, Musical Instruments, Bail Money. The Liberty Bridge will keep us covered from any impending rain.

If you cannot be there, please direct all support to the Thomas Merton Center. Calls will be answered as soon as possible at (412)-361-3022

Donations for legal support can be sent to:
The Thomas Merton Center
5125 Penn Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15206

Please contact Pittsburgh Chief of Police Robert McNeilly and demand that all charges be dropped and the arrested to be released, 412-323-7800. He should be in around 8 am.

Is there a more in-depth report available from anyone? Was there a black bloc there?

Lets talk!
by Burgh Bloc'er Monday, Apr. 19, 2004 at 8:26 PM

Hmm. I was in the black bloc today holding one of the banners and lets see... I showered this morning before work, I don't have any piercings, I haven't had any alcohol since Saturday night and rather than being stupid I have a college degree and a 9-5 job working as the circulation department of an independent publisher. Go figure. If you'd like to meet up and talk in a public place, I'd welcome the opportunity to shatter your misconceptions of us. Surely you'd like to prove yourself right, huh?

Come on, throw your best insult... I'd suggest trying something new rather than the same old stinky and pierced freeper material.

Jail Solidarity??

Jail solidarity? HA HA HA!
Petition McNeilly to drop charges? On what grounds? There were rules laid out for protesters and they were broken. That leads to Public Code violations, unless the Blank Block thinks that their bandannas can magically sheild then from a court summons (?).
As for a working 9 to 5 in publishing at an independant newspaper with a college degree, that smells of "liberal arts from a degree-mill working at a City Paper rag".
Face it, Broke Bloc, THE PROTEST WAS A FAILURE. The effect was nothing more than a good laugh. Pay your fine and move on to the next joke.

Nope George Kramer, not working at the City Paper and I don't possess a liberal arts degree. You're the one insulting people's intelligence without grounds, so let us all ask, what prestigious degree do you possess? Where do you work?

If you'd like to meet up and compare qualifications, we can do that. I'm confident that I can speak more articulately, have a better grasp of history and science, and can refrain from making unsubstantiated ad hoc arguments. Or are you too scared?

Beaver
by rouser Tuesday, Apr. 20, 2004 at 8:18 AM

Beaver is where it's at, no reason to leave and discuss credentials with someone cultured when you live in glorious Beaver and call town "Pittsburgh". Hey George, why do you feel the need to concern yourself with a place you need to ask directions to find?
George: "Hey, kin you tell me where Picksburg is at, ana't?"
Beaverite: "I dunno, I stay away from Picksburg with all dem cuhlards runnin around dahn there."

There's no reason to insult these people. If the protest wasn't a success, let's learn from our mistakes and do better next time. We're all on the same side here.

stupid labels
by gwen Tuesday, Apr. 20, 2004 at 11:42 PM

Actually, there are a fair number of us protestors, including some who could be thought of as being in the black bloc, who are attending the major universities here in town for computer or computer-related degrees.

Please don't typecast. It only makes you look bad.

Hell. I'm a Republican. Let that one blow your gaskets.a

"Right-winger" who agrees that what was seen of the police was "questionabl
by 2nd Amendment Fan Wednesday, Apr. 21, 2004 at 4:26 AM

I was on the other side of the street watching POG. Of course I don't agree with your stance, but I agree with your right to do peaceful demonstrations. But I guess the question is, were you "peaceful" and how does one define "peaceful".

I left before Bush left, but I saw the police using their bikes as a moving obstruction to your demonstration. I thought that this looked a bit odd of the police to do this, as the police actually appeared to be interfering with protest which I thought looked quite normal and at the time peaceful. The whole street (it wasn't as you described, a "driveway") was blocked off anyway, so who really cares if a few of you step off within a foot or two of the curb (you were also still behind the barricades separating people from the convention center). There were over 100 leftists there, and on an 8-ft wide sidewalk you'd expect a few to spill over.

Unless...

Computer degrees for jobs that are being shipped off to code-monkeys in India?
Unless you are a PhD in Materials Sci or Physics that can contribute to fundamentally engineering new chips or storage media, the computer engineers being educated now missed the glorious "'90s bubble". Go FreeMarkets.
And don't think that because I live outside of Allegheny County, I don't frequently travel there, that glorious jewel of a small, mid-American, "wants-to-be-more-intellectual" city. It's actual "city" is small...can be walked across in 10 minutes, but is in no way a "big tahn".
There is some imported culture.
And there is a small movement of people who want to model themselves after "dissedents" and "protest greats", but who cannot focus on a single issue to stand behind, let alone support a single form of governmental authority.
For Gwen, who says she is a republican...You must be a R. in the vein of Arlen Specter, one of the great entrenched Republicrats of the day. If you want to fight against anyone, fight against the re-election of a lifetime-entrenched, burecratic politician.
