pog/tmc call to protest Cheney
by 444444 Friday, Jul. 02, 2004 at 12:13 PM

Call by members of the Thomas Merton Center and Pittsburgh Organizing Group to protest Dick Cheney's visit to Pittsburgh this 4th of July

This message was sent out by the Thomas Merton Center-

Members of the Thomas Merton Center and Pittsburgh Organizing Group will be peacefully gathering at Noon in front of Soldiers and Sailors (corner of Fifth and Bigelow in Oakland) on Sunday, July 4th. We’ll be there to tell Vice President Cheney he is not welcome in our city! He is coming as part of the Bush-Cheney effort to secure PA this November. But almost 860 US troops having died in Iraq - what a fitting time for him to exploit the sacrifice of so many for his political gain. Given the fact he has elected to use our fine city as his political backdrop for such a nationally important day we hope people will consider making an effort to give him the welcome he deserves...

The TMC did not secure a permit for this action but it is a public sidewalk. There is no direct action planned for this event. We simply want to gather and show our strength as people for peace that will not be hoodwinked by the Bush campaign rhetoric. We know the truth! Bring signs, placards, flowers to remember the thousands of innocent lives that have been taken in this war. There is no contact for this event, the details are all here. We simply encourage supporters of peace and justice to come out and join us.

See you on Sunday!

Who are the Bush supporters?
by Larry Hayhurst Monday, Jul. 05, 2004 at 9:01 AM
lhayhurst@netscape.net

I attended the counter demonstation in front of Soldiers and Sailors Military Museum July 4th. I stood on the corner and watched the demonstation dwindle down to a handful people. Then the Bush/Cheney supporters came streaming out of the Museum. By in large they were poor white people, who judging by their remarks, had a very limited understanding of the significance of the event. We should have stayed en masse and interacted with them. We need to fight the Republicans for every vote, every poor white person. Our democracy is at stake.
We were down to five or six people when Cheney's motorcade left the Museum. Republican operatives lined the street and cheered for Cheney's departure, the cameras (finally) rolled. Who organized this thing? Where are our brains?
I am disappointed in the Democratic Party, this event was as important as the Kerry rally Tuesday. But we handled it badly and missed an opportunity to fight.

Larry you ignorant slut
by Huhay Hurah Monday, Jul. 05, 2004 at 10:43 AM

Yes, of course Larry, "poor white people" could never be as enlightened as you, therefor their political views must be deficient and undesirable. Of course, these "poor white people" are being lied to and taken advantage of because their "poorness" and their "whtieness" make them intellectually feeble in your righteous leftist mind.

Oh Larry, you are what is wrong with the Deomcrats. To you there is no correct view other than your own. Do you think that maybe these "poor white people" have in fact reveiwed the politics of the candidates and parties and have made their own choice (i.e. not one that you would make for them as the all knowing benevolent director of political thought). Larry, their opinions are important (as you might say) and no less valid than your own jaundiced view of the world.

I too was there. I was one of those that you judge to be "poor (white? but I am not white) people". I was also confronted by your protesters. I did not want to engage anyone, I just wanted to get inside (you people scare me). But your protesters were busy screaming in my face about me supporting a murderer, me supporting the raping of the world's natural resources, and on and on and nearly accosting me and others. Hey, there are a lot of issues to address in any political debate, rather than the monofocal approach of the protesters and the left. I mean the Sierra Club ranting on about energy and the environment, but the Democrats that this tax exempt organization supports have steadfastly opposed any attempts to institute an energy policy (thus keeping the price of natural gas and electricity very high, and hurting the poor that you are so concerned about). And then there are the Abu Graib Street Theater Puppets that will be a fixture at every protest for the next decade I am sure. This is extremism run amok. Abu Graib is a deporable anomaly which is being swiftly dealt with by America's criminal ustice system. It is not institutionalized torture (and anyone who has thought seriously about it realizes it). Abu Graib is far less serious than the war crimes of John Kerry (remember, he admitted killing civilians and destroying civilian property). But the aging hippy chiks that stood around there leafletting and screaming some tirade at other people who just wanted to get inside for the event was uncivilized, disrespectful and just simply ignorant.

More of the Tactics of Hate from The Party of Hate and Anger and Pessimism .. THE DEMOCRATS.

BTW: Have the dems gotten Ralph Nader to silence his political action. More of the tactics of silencing your opposition from the party that gave us the concept .. The Democrats. The motto of the Left "I deserve to be heard...so everyone else shut up." Got Fascism?

Hate speech
by Larry Hayhurst Wednesday, Jul. 07, 2004 at 6:53 AM

Huhay Hurah's heading "Larry you ignorant slut" borders on hate speech. Something must have struck a nerve. The text of
Huhay Hurah's message however is a considered opinion. This is exactly what I'd hoped for, it has to come out.

The identification of enemies and scapegoats as a unifying cause is fascist. Rush Limbaugh, who is in effect a White House spokesman, speaks to millions of radio listeners daily in the most demeaning of tones as he propagandizes for the war and against Democrats and John Kerry.
Disdain for the recognition of Human Rights is fascist. The apologists for the military downplay the images of the humiliation and torture of Iraqi soldiers. Limbaugh compared the activities to fraternity hazing.
Obsession with National Security, rampant sexism and disdain for the intellectuals and the Arts is fascist. Fascism rejects the liberal doctrines of individual autonomy and rights, political pluralism, and representative government. It seeks to forcibly subordinate all spheres of society to its ideological vision of organic community, usually through a totalitarian state. Both as a movement and a regime, fascism uses mass organizations as a system of integration and control, and uses organized violence to suppress opposition. See: http://www.disinfopedia.org/wiki.phtml?title=Fascism

People entering the Soldiers and Sailors Military Museum may have been harassed by the counter-demonstrators, I don't know, I got there late. By the time the Cheney speech was over only a handful of demonstrators were left on the sidewalk. When the people inside came out of the Museum it may have been pay-back time. I heard personal threats and dehumanizing verbal attacks on the Kerry supporters, on the other demonstrators and the causes they represent. Young white Rebublican operatives (thugs) surrounded us, taunted us, made demeaning remarks about our politics and insulted us. They lined the street side waving signs and cheering for the Cheney motorcade as it left.

It is remarkable that Huhay Hurah seems to be enraged by the same thing I experienced, political harrassment. Nobody likes it! We need to talk to Republican voters, not piss them off. They are as human as us.

Larry you humorless twit
by Hoohrah for Hoohay Friday, Jul. 09, 2004 at 8:34 PM

Larry, Hurah's comment DOES NOT border on hate speech. It does border on humor though. That is from an old SNL skit. But maybe you are to young to know abbout that. Do a Google search.

If that is what you think is hate speech, I can not beleive that anything that was said to you by the people coming out of S&S was threatening. It was most likely entirely harmless but your girllie-man sensitivities must have sent you right into a hormonal seizure.

Get a life Larry Boy. Get Real.

Fascist names
by Larry Saturday, Jul. 10, 2004 at 6:55 AM

22 November 1999: "Is George W. Really Ready? A leader with a gentleman's C may no longer cut it in a world where speed and smarts rule" by Jonathan Alter, Newsweek Vol. 134 Issue 21, p47:

". . . Bush wouldn't have to worry so much about performance if he had a compelling life story to give him gravitas. Unfortunately for him, he's had the least eventful personal history of any major political figure in modern memory. Until his 1994 election as governor of Texas, Dubya lived deep in his father's shadow. President Bush was an academic and athletic star at Andover and Yale, a war hero and successful oilman. George W. was an academic slacker at the same schools, a mediocre athlete, a member of the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War and an unsuccessful oilman. Before politics, he was probably best known for the nicknames he attached to people—a hipper and more sarcastic version of the Saturday Night Live character who gives everyone he meets a name while 'makin' copies.' . . ."
Bush is not the only Republican who likes giving everyone names.

Are we electing the class president?
by Sargent Snorkel Saturday, Jul. 10, 2004 at 8:25 AM

Larry, Who, Hey !!! An uneventful pesonal history? Kind of like he might have even been a haberdasher from the midwest before he became president. Or maybe, like Al Gore, he just plain didn't like school. Al GOre never even graduatd if I recall. Didn't he flunk God in a fialed divinity school attempt. I remember an old quip fro my school days. The A students become professors, the B Students get good jobs, the C students bcome fihy rich and sucesful, and the D sudents work for the government.

But Larry, as an aging and part time student yourself, who has yet to complete a sensible degre, should you really be the first to make such useless judgement calls about anyone else and cast such stones.

Gore v Bush
by Larry Monday, Jul. 12, 2004 at 11:07 PM

Vice President Gore received a degree in government with honors from Harvard University in 1969. After graduation, he volunteered for enlistment in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. http://www.al-gore-2004.org/gorebiography/albio.htm

A graduate of Yale University, John Kerry entered the Navy after graduation, becoming a Swift Boat officer, serving on a gunboat in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. He received a Silver Star, Bronze Star with Combat V, and three awards of the Purple Heart for his service in combat. http://www.johnkerry.com/about/

John Edwards was the first in his family to attend and gradate from college. He spent one semester at Clemson then transferred to North Carolina State where he graduated in three years. Summer work between college semesters was in the textile mills for John and the family assumed he would return to the mill after college but hopefully in a managerial position - a position he was preparing for by majoring in textile management. John was accepted at the University of North Carolina Law School at Chapel Hill. http://www.appalachianpower.com/John%20Edwards,%20Vice-Presidential%20candidate,%20born%20in%20a%20southern%20Appalachian%20county%20of%20South%20Carolina.htm

George Bush enrolled at Yale University, like his father, George H.W. Bush, had done two decades before. But unlike his father, who was captain of the baseball team and graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Bush did not excel as an athlete (he did make the freshman baseball team) or a scholar. Once referred to as "the life of the party," Bush instead made his mark on the university's social scene. He was elected the president of his fraternity and joined the exclusive and secretive Skull & Bones Society. When Bush received his bachelor's degree in 1968, U.S. involvement in Vietnam was escalating. Faced with the prospects of being drafted, he joined the Texas Air National Guard and became an F-102 pilot. http://www.bop2004.org/bop2004/candidate.aspx?cid=1

Vice President Dick Cheney's stint at Yale University was cut short by his flunking out, Mr. Cheney studied at the University of Wyoming, where he earned his B.A. (1965) and M.A. (1966) degrees in political science. He continued his studies toward the goal of a Ph.D. in that discipline at the University of Wisconsin but, just shy of finishing, he left graduate school in 1969 to work in the Nixon White House. http://ap.grolier.com/article?assetid=0431390-00&templatename=/article/article.html
