PGH IMC -- The Local Left Version of Faux News
by Ewan Kenkesmearse Sunday, Jun. 08, 2003 at 10:19 AM

The IMC Editorial Collective continues to pursue a biased and self interested policy with respect to the rights and freedoms of participants at this site. IMC's policies of censorship and exclusion continue. The Collective's practices in this regard are arbitrary and abusive. The Collective has made PGH IMC less "fair and balanced" than Faux News. PGH IMC's slogan should be "We Distort. We Deride."

The Editorial Collectives double secret precise and concise method of dealing with spammers is nothing more than the Collectives arbitrary application of its authority and ability to deny a member of this community access to what is supposed to be a free and open website for news and discussion. Although the Collective claims that this is a brilliant (http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6759_comment.php#6791 ) solution that only excludes spammers, I have contended that the Collectives brilliant solution goes far beyond that and excludes persons who are not spammers (of course, that does depend on how you define spam, but we will get to the later). I have also stated that I am none of the spammers that IMC intended to exclude from this site ( http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6734_comment.php#6820 ). And it appears that in the anti-opposition zeal of the Editorial Collective, they succeeded in excluding many many more people from the IMC site than the few spammers that they were after.

In addition to specifically targeting my computer with some intrusive technology, the Collectives brilliant techno-death penalty actual hit the internet gateway that I use and excludes everyone who uses that ISP. I have tried to access the IMC site from several PCs that use this gateway, and all of them are similarly excluded. So, in an effort to precisely and justly eliminate a few undesirables from the IMC site, the Collective has excluded over 1,000 people. That is correct, the indiscriminate nature of this brilliant technology has excluded every person that accesses the internet through this gateway. Sounds exactly like the broad brush prejudice that characterizes the justice that we so frequently hear of on these pages. Unless you are of the same mind as the chosen few of the IMC Club then you have no right to justice or freedom that the rest of the chosen few enjoy.

THIS IS A VALID NEWS STORY

The Editorial Collectives unilateral and abusive exercise of its ability to silence the voice of even one person IS news. It IS the most important news item here. These actions by the Collective diminish the effectiveness of IMC overall and its credibility. Although many people here have been quick to resort to personal insults directed towards me and others who posted in support of me (http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6634_comment.php#6889 ) or to call me a liar (see the postings by members of the Collective and the bright red label attached to posts on this issue http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6734_comment.php#6820 , http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6634_comment.php#6889 ), I have presented supported information to validate my assertions. Yet, the same people that feel your voice should be silenced at their whim only try to ignore and shout down this criticism.

The IMC Editors told us that their exclusionary tactics specifically identified only the undesirable element as determined by the Collective. But they were wrong and their mistake is keeping others from posting here. Some people here have expressed a view that it is okay to exclude me and others who would be critical of IMC simply because they are opposed to our views and believe that these views should not be expressed at this open forum. Others say that this is a newswire and is not a forum for discussion and debate. But if that is truly the case, then IMC should apply that to all persons here and remove the opportunity to comment on news or have discussion. But wouldnt that just prove that the political views of the IMC Editorial Collective and Chosen Few cannot always withstand the scrutiny of debate and discussion? Maybe that is what IMC is afraid of.

It seems that the Collective has used the ability to exclude entire ISPs to keep the access to this site the hands of the Chosen Few and to eliminate (or at least minimize) potential for any opposition or critical thought in the oh so sacred consensus process. Or even forget about consensus, how about just letting the discussion and comments reflect some diversity of thought.

IMCs POLICIES ARE NOT FAIRLY OR UNIFORMLY APPLIED

The Editors and the Chosen Few try to say that it is the spammers that are abusive to this site and others here. They try to say that the IMC Collective is acting to exclude people who use abusive language or personal attacks or racist comments. But it seems that if you are one of the Chosen Few you are permitted to use personal and hateful attacks (for example, postings by puhleeeze at the various strings discussing this issue; posts by Wolverine and F#%$ the Yunzer at http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6803_comment.php#6910 ; comments at http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6814_comment.php#6857 ; posts by Steve Argue at http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6580_comment.php#6832 for just a few examples). It seems that if you threaten someone or insult someone but you do so from the favored leftist pulpit of the IMC Collective, then it is just hunky-dory. But if you are critical of anyone or anything on that favored left and do so from the right or middle you are labeled a hater, racist or idiot and should be banished. Banished I guess until you are re-educated.

I first noticed this incredible depth of hypocrisy during the Rich Makin debacle. Not only did the IMC Collective facilitate the (legally actionable) slander and libel of Rich Makin, but they demonstrated that threats of violence and statements of hate from the favored few are squarely within the editorial policy of the IMC. While at the same time any voice of moderation or even cries for an end to the lynch mob mentality were labeled as racists, sexist, ignorant and hateful. My personal favorite was the statements by an Elina (it seems that she may be quoting a Branden in her post) where Rich Makin is called a rapist and he is threatened with physical harm to be kept out of the Project 1877 venue http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/04/4393_comment.php#6601 ). Yet a spammer seems to be anyone who posts anything that is even mildly offensive to the (apparently sensitive) views of the Chosen Few. This is the hypocrisy that characterizes the Collective and the modern American Left.

WHAT EXACTLY IS SPAM

What is Spam? Who is a spammer? I have been called a spammer just because I posted this issue on the site. That does not seem fair or right that people should say that I should be excluded because I have posted a critical news item about being excluded. More interesting is the extent to which the Collective will go to convince themselves and others that the protests to IMCs actions which are contrary to freedom and individual rights are coming only from an isolated one or two people. This is amazing. There have been several postings which support exactly what I am referring to. There are even several other news items devoted to this issue that were posted by persons other than me The only strings started by me are at http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6572_comment.php#6735 (which had to be re-posted after IMC removed it once) and http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6734_comment.php#6820 . But there are four other strings started by persons other than me which deal with this issue http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6759_comment.php#6791 http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6662_comment.php#6831 http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6814_comment.php#6857 and http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6634_comment.php#6889. And this issue is not new and references to the Collectives arbitrary policies of censorship can be found in other discussions. The most notable of these was the discussion started by S. Odamninsane because that persons postings where removed solely for reasons of voicing objection to the views of the Chosen Few (check out http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/04/4668.php if you are not familiar with this). The S. Odamninsane protest was probably one of the more effective protests facilitated by these pages, and was undertaken by a person who seemed to be a regular poster that would not be characterized as a spammer. Did IMC also banish S.O.?

The Editorial Collectives cries of spamming and misuse of the IMC site are laughable. Especially when IMC actively promotes (or allows to be promoted at its site) the use of Wartools and Peacetools for the singular purpose of spamming the websites of those persons or businesses that IMC deems to have political or social views different from those of the Chosen Few. Hypocrisy in action.

THE SEVERAL LEGAL RISKS OF THE EDITORIAL COLLECTIVES ACTIONS

Since the Editors have the ability to control the discussion at this site and have demonstrated their willingness (in fact it seems to be policy) to intervene in and even direct the discussion by controlling who may participate, IMC has become a publisher of material and not just a passive vehicle of the voices of others. This is meaningful since IMC then has the liability for the material that it permits to be published at its site. For example, Rich Makin could bring his claims for libel and slander against IMC and each of the persons that made the libelous statements on these pages. IMC would be legally obliged to disclose all information related to these persons which IMC has or can obtain. IMC would have to demonstrate how it was that IMC did not use the authority that it wields to stop dissenters to protect against further harm to Rich Makin (even in light of the several postings warning IMC of its risks). The Rich Makin case would be a plaintiff lawyers dream and could threaten IMC with the significant burden of legal costs and a possible judgment.

This same risk carries over when IMC allows criminal conduct (often disguised as diversity of tactics ) to be discussed at these pages with the intent that these actions will be undertaken at some protest or march. IMC is a co-conspirator in the criminal conduct. Postings at the IMC page were already successfully used in the prosecution of some of the 122. If only the prosecutors were aware of IMCs role as a facilitator in the conduct they could have pursued an action directly against IMC and its editors. That too would be a prosecutors dream, complete with headlines and stories in the lawyer press. Think about all the stuff that IMC allows to be posted here and promotes. All of those videos of protesters vandalizing private businesses in Shadyside, the videos of protesters littering the streets with overturned dumpsters, the calls to action to confront people at Starbucks (in the process committing trespass and extortion).
And the same applies to the promotion of the spam software Wartools and Peacetools. This software has only one purpose. It is used only to cause economic harm and electronic sabotage to the private websites of those enterprises deemed undesirable by the Chosen Few. In some cases these websites are political. In which case it appears that IMC and the promoters of this software are working in coordination to deny the lawful legal rights of others to express their political views.

All IMC needs is for Starbucks or some other business (maybe some business that is the victim of Wartools) to get serious and demand that IMC be prosecuted. With its new policies of excluding persons who voice opposition to the favored political views of IMC, the Editorial Collective has given up its legal defense that it does not control the content and postings of private individuals at its site.

Another very important risk is that the Collective has put the tax exempt status of IMC at risk. Thats right, PGH IMC is a federally tax exempt organization (http://indypgh.org/process/wishlist/ ). For all that IMC and others here profess to hate the government and wish for anarchy, it is good to see that they are not to proud to accept a good government subsidy when they see one (but that is a news item for another day). However, one of the conditions of being a tax exempt organization is that the organization conduct itself in a proper manner, which includes that it does not discriminate against anyone for any reason, including for their political views or their exercise of their first amendment rights. And the conduct of the IMC Collective is infringing upon the free speech rights of many people including me and others that have been victim of the imprecise technically brilliant electronic muzzle of the Collective.

Some people here have tried to say that IMC has no obligation to allow anyone to speak here. They are wrong. IMC is not a private organization such as Faux News. IMC can not arbitrarily exclude the opinions of those it finds undesirable. If anyone truly had it in for IMC they could very easily challenge the tax exempt status of the organization. Or the government could do so on its own because of the actions of the Collective.

IMC ACT NOW

IMC should protect itself and regain its credibility. IMC should immediately stop using the Double Secret Techno Death Penalty and remove its effects from the IMC site. This would return the IMC site to the people. Return it to the open community at large. It would demonstrate that IMC is not afraid of dissent. It would demonstrate that IMC is not going to tolerate the hypocrisy of the left.

It would demonstrate that IMC is truly more Fair and Balanced than Faux News.

oh the garbage continues!

to address a couple points-

the above article is full of lies and distortions. I'd discourage people from wasting their time replying. this individual has been disrupting the newswire for awhile now and will not stop no matter how many times people answer questions or address "concerns".

throw this garbage out and let's get back to having a viable imc.

This person also keeps spamming, via his repetitive posts on other articles, pointing people to this one. The article is well written, however. The guy is putting a lot of effort into this. I think he should get a cookie ;)

I don't know ...
by ^ Tuesday, Jun. 10, 2003 at 3:56 AM

This Ewan is really twarped off about this. He has provided some very interesting information that we should take seriously. A lot of people and IMC have been saying that his claims are nothing but lies and distortion, but he is making alot more sense and giving better analysis than IMC editors.

I think IMC may have made a mistake. I have been wondering just how IMC could have smacked only the spammers without identifying them. It looks like they not only got the wrong person here but that they have also got alot more people than they meant to.

This is really getting dangerous if IMC thinks that it is acceptable for them to exclude anyone that they want.

Sounds like something is up
by Diane B. Tuesday, Jun. 10, 2003 at 11:44 PM

At first I really didn't know what to make of Mr. Ewan. But I have noticed two distinct patterns in this discussion. Mr. Ewan rants on about his feeling of being violated by the injustice of the imc editors, and the imc editors and their supporters counter Mr. Ewan by calling him a liar or saying that his tale is stitched together with colorful fabrications. But after reading Mr. Ewan's article above I am impressed with his analysis and his arguments. And I am unimpressed and offended that someone feels the need to tell me to ignore the voice of another person without giving me the slightest explaination of why.

Mr. Ewan, whether he is a spammer or not, is certainly passionate and is contributing to intellegent discussion of news. I had thought that the imc editors had some brilliant computer algorithm that could idenitfy only the persons who were abusing imc. But it sounds like imc's program needed some more testing. If imc locked out a whole isp that was wrong. We can't just shut down an isp because there might be one bad person accessing through that isp. Can you lift this when that person changes isp's? Probably not. You cannot claim to fight for justice while at the same time exercising injustice.

Mr. Ewan, I believe you may have been treated very shabbily here. You are entitled to state you views. I have no fear or reservation about reading or hearing the views of anyone, even the spammers at this sight. And I for one will support your right to present your news and opinions here.

I ask that the imc editors can join me in support of the right of everyone to participatre at this website. Please don't assault this person any more just because he (or she) brought this issue to our attention. Fairness and undrstanding are vital to this community.

the editorial collective censors!
by Michael Wednesday, Jun. 11, 2003 at 11:54 AM

Well, actually we don't. Please note that we believe that every person has an equal right to post to IndyPgh. But not every news story, as per our published editorial policy, has equal right to remain linked on the site. This is an important distinction that does not yet seem to be widely understood.

As well, please recognize that not every post claiming "lies and distortions" is posted by a member of the Editorial Collective. A number of them are posted by disappointed users responding to what they view as a misuse of the system.

Haters aside, the Pittsburgh IMC will continue to rock the news, non-stop.

the bottom line
by david Thursday, Jun. 12, 2003 at 3:25 PM

ewan: if you were truly concerned about free speech, you'd put your energies into a genuine threat -- namely, the monopolization of the media by such monoliths as news corporation (murdoch).

moreover, if imc were truly guilty of censorship your many news stories on this false issue wouldn't be here. pitttsburgh imc is to be commended for putting up with your waste of bandwidth, as are the many other imc's across the country who have faced similar harassment by the likes of you and prodigal yunzer.

to ewan and yunzer: either reveal yourselves as fbi plants or else go away. your mission is clear: you wish to undermine the value of indymedia as an alternative to the mainstream media. since you won't succeed, you're simply wasting your time here.

to the rest of indymedia users: i propose that heretofore we simply ignore (but not censor) the onslaught of disruptive posts by ewan et. al. if we refuse to acknowledge their provocations, eventually they will abandon their mission.

They have censored him, and the point is while we know his story we now have no way of knowing who else they have censored. I myself have had several posts "hidden" (effectively deleted, let's call it what it is) for nothing other than disagreeing with other posters.

well you could just goto the latest news section, select "hidden" (the default is "all"), and hit "go". this will show all of the articles we've "censored". let me tell you, it's pretty damning stuff. i hope no one notices.

really though, we haven't "censored" anything. the hidden articles are more of a filter, but this has been explained numerous times. if you truely feel oppressed, then please feel free to show up to one of our meetings and take part in the imc process. if you're not willing to do anything but complain anonymously here then dont expect to be taken seriously.

It's Still Censorship No Matter How You Try To Spin It !!
by Jackel Tuesday, Jun. 17, 2003 at 2:34 PM

You don't have to hide Ewan's posts for it to be censorship ... you can just keep him from logging on in the first place. If the government did that it would be called "prior restraint." Once again, the great minds of indymedia have completely missed the mark.

Not only have you missed the point, but you seem to have locked out an entire ISP. Oh, what genius you must have writting your evil code at indymedia.

Be honest editors and other indymedia apologists, you are trying to make this just one great big leftist love fest where true diversity of thought and ideas and even news is not welcome. Only the dictates of the indymedia politbureau will be permitted.

But the best part has to be that this Ewan seems like he was probably a moderate and pretty much in the indymedia passive leftist "I Love You, You Love Me" Zoloft wonderland before you went and pissed him off. Even in his rants he is far more coherent and makes a lot more sense than the indymedia bootlickers.

So what is this BS that you "don't" track IP's and your double secret Mickey Mouse Club cookie generater only gets the "bad" guys? You had to idenitify IPs to send a cookie only to the bad guys. Then you cookied a whole ISP !!! That is hilarious. Not only are you censoring hipocrits, but you are not very honest.

You know what actually is funny, Jackel?

You refer to the site operators as "bootlickers" and sarcastically as "great minds", yet, with all of your insults, you do not know how to spell hypocrite. One might say that is a bit "hypocritical" on your part that you insult others and cannot spell a word most of us learned in the 6th grade. Also, Jackel is spelled Jackal, but that could be some sort of clever name trick.

Mr. Jackel, don't call people names until you can present flawless and coherent writings, like I just did. . . stupid.

Yes Miss Merryweather (If that is your real name):

1. I can't type, and my spelling is a product of public education.

2. You are pretty arrogant to suggest that everything I say lacks absolutely any credibility just because of a misspelled word or two, but that your statements carry the weight of all logic and sensibility solely because of your flawless few lines of typing and command of a Merriam Webster.

3. The indymedia bootlickers still have not addressed any of the issues that this Ewan rasies, such as how in the hell they have cookies that only get the bad guys without tracking IPs.

4. It is still censorship when you keep someone from logging on all together.

5. It is still hYpocracy (or hIpocracie, for those of you who could not afford the silver spoon education fo Ms. Merryweather) when indymedia tries to tell us that Ewan is lying just becasue they said so and then they get all pissy because the guy keeps pointing out that they are hippiecrits.

6. Ewan Kenkismearse's articles are alot more coherent than Ms. Merryweather's or the indymedia puppets.

7. indymedia will never answer up for the censorship becasue they like the power of controlling the ideas and articles here.

8. It will continue rainign until the waste-of-time 3 rivers arts festival is over.

by Francis Merryweather Tuesday, Jun. 17, 2003 at 9:49 PM

Hey Dimwit,

I'm a black male who went to Harrisburg High School. My mother is a Nurse's Aide at a hospital there, and my father didn't live with us when I was growing up. I can spell because I paid attention in my public school classes of 50 students.

So thus far you've called me a woman and said that I was born rich. Any other comments you'd like to make without knowing me? I could give you a brief autobiography on the ins and outs of my life if that would make it easier.

You are stupid not because you went to a lousy public school or because you were possibly born poor, but because you most likely have a disease I like to call "Being a Dumbass". The most likely signs of this disease are frequent bouts of whining and paranoia: "Indymedia is blocking my posts!!! Whaaa!!!" Frankly, if I ran a website, I would not let you or your comrades' messages be seen either, because we are all a little bit dumber for having read your gibberish. . . stupid.

by = Friday, Jun. 20, 2003 at 10:08 AM

Francis and Jackel seem to both suffer from Dumbass Disease. Jackel is rude, Francis is arrogant. Probably worse is that they are now caught up in an argument over who can spell better.

The real concern here is that IMC's editors are acting no better than either of Francis or Jackel. I really want to know why the IMC editors think it is okay to attack an entire ISP and then go on attacking someone who is upset about it. I would be upset too. Especially when it is looking like the editors did not get the spammers they were after.

The conduct of the IMC editors is outrageous. You are censoring when you fight to keep someone from speaking their mind in the first place. It is those unpopular opinions that need protection. Wise up IMC !!!

Some other whining idiot, pretending to be reasonable or should I say "fair and unbalanced". It reminds me of you people's hero O'Reilly, crying at the LA publisher's convention when Al Franken tore him a new asshole. The former "Inside Edition" host, O'Reilly, doesn't know what to do if he can't cut off the mic or say "that's spin"! You chickenhawks are all alike. The editorial collective doesn't have the technology to block entire ISP's, what is this friggin Tron or something? You trolls are a waste of life and bandwidth and have an entire corporate media that caters to and forms your delusions. Just because your masters at "free" republic tell you to harrass free-thinkers who are attempting to form their own communities and resources, doesn't mean that the indies have to give you a soapbox.

MAYBE A DIFFERENT MORON
by = Friday, Jun. 20, 2003 at 10:39 AM

Why don't you quit pidgeonholing everyone that you disagree with into the broad spectrum of conservative/libertarian Fox News drone? I have been reading this stuff from Ewan and others for some time and they are making more sense than everyone who just wants to attack them and people like me who speak up or who just want some reasonable debate on this matter.

As I understand this guy, IMC somehow blocked the private ISP that he uses. It sounds like it is at his workplace and that at least 1,000 people access through that ISP. IMC had said that the cookie monster they unleashed only identified particular spammers. But it sounds like it identified this private ISP server. Now that isn't the same as just locking out a particular individual for abusing IMC.

Rather than attacking everyone you disagree with as have some imtimate love affair with the right wing media cabal, why don't you try reading (and hearing) objectively without prejudice. The bias and venom that you display has no place in this or any other reasonable debate, and certainly does not prmote understanding. It is just another way to attempt to repress unpopular thought and speech. Not unlike the tactics of Mr. O'Reilly that you refer to.

There is no shotage of morons here. Your independent community of "free" thinkers is a farce. The fabulous "articles" that "make so much sense" are just articles that someone else writes and the troll adds some words to convert it to the "correct " chickenhawk viewpoint, lengthy whining dissertations about his ridiculous posts being hidden, but mostly combinations of the two. Just because some freeper who thinks his opinion is so important that it must be displayed claims that the collective shut down entire ISP's or whatever nonsense he alleges doesn't make it so. Reminds me of Gore claiming he invented the internet or Bush claiming he served in the military or O'Reilly's Peabody award. This isn't TV, just because it's here doesn't make it true. Just because "Ewan" says it doesn't make it reality, he's not Sean Hannity.

I don't think he is miffed because they are hiding his comments. The IMC editors have done something to his computer to keep him from logging on and posting at IMC in the first place. We all know that IMC hides posts and that they will do this in some cases where they don't like the political position of the posting. But for them to exclude someone all together is really a problem.

My Turn
by Ewan Kenkesmearse Wednesday, Jun. 25, 2003 at 12:59 PM

Michael says that IMC does not censor since EVERYONE has an equal right to post at the IMC site, but he still does not address the fact that this is ONLY the case if that EVERYONE is permitted by the Collective to access the site. IMC censors by excluding participation and maintaining only an acceptable list of invitees to this media masquerade ball.

And the Collective seems to find this all very amusing. Their abuse of their authority is apparently their official policy. Because I am pointing out that the editorial policies are inconsistent and that the Collectives actions in tampering with the webservers and PCs that access this site are dangerous, arbitrary and exclusionary, I am the one undermining IMC. Check this link to John Harrolds statement on this article (http://howard.indypgh.org/pipermail/imc-pgh-editorial/2003-June/000804.html ). John says: we should feel honored that someone would take time to try to undermine us [link to this article]. really though. this makes me think that something is being done right.

John, tell me again how your anti-spam program (1) only excludes spammers that you believe are deserving of exile form this site, (2) does this WITHOUT identifying the IP log of the spammer, (3) and still manages to exclude every PC that accesses the web through the ISP that the spammer accesses through. I have said before that you hit my PC and I was NOT one of the spammers that you were after. I suggested that I may have simply happened to be on the site when the spammers were and got hit also. I dont know what you did, but you got me and about 1,000 other people with your cookie mania. Who knows, maybe one of the spammers was accessing through our gateway, or maybe they were one of the Wi-Fi squatters that take advantage of our wireless access at and around our facilities. But your process for dealing with spammers is flawed.

And to ME and others that think this is some sort of techno farce that my iSP has been shut out, you need to talk to the computer geniuses at IMC. Here is the situation: (1) the IMC Editors sent out some sort of cookie that was intended to nab some spammers; (2) I was not one of those spammers; (3) even after deleting all of the cookies on my PC, resulting in a real pain in the but since I couldnt just selectively remove the bad cookie since I did not know where it was, I was still unable to log on to IMC; (4) I tried to log on to IMC from several other PCs at my company and everyone of these was also locked out; (5) apparently IMCs secret cookie lodged itself at our company web access server because no PC at the company can access IMC; (6) there are about 1,000 people that use that internet access. There, for about the 100th time, that is the problem. They DID block an entire ISP. That is a fact. I thin that sort of thing is illegal so I should probably be complaining to my company IT group or the FBI. Or maybe to the IRS and see how long it takes them to revoke the IMC tax exempt status.

This is really Fed up. You people dont see any problem with IMC just locking anyone out because they disagree with their political views. That is the only reason that I can think of that IMC would have targeted or be interested in keeping me from accessing the site. They have hidden my posts in the past. But I AM NOT (let me repeat that for the slower ones in the crowd I AM NOT) the spammer(s) that they say they were after. In fact, one of the spammers they said they were after (a Jackel or Jackal or whatever) has actually posted on this string.

And to anticipate the obvious, if dimwitted questions of a few out there, I can only log on to IMC when I do this from a computer that accesses form outside my regular ISP. This is why I can not respond a frequently as I would like. On weekends I am with family outside of town and can use a PC there, or I can use another PC if I can get access to one (or, like today, I an use this fine PC at the coffee shop in the airport). Since I use my work ISP for all of my internet access, including dial up service when out of the office, This is the only way I can respond.

Of course I am twarped off. I havent been this fired up about anything at this site. But the IMC Editors have stop me from participating here at all. And I am twarped off that someone has the ability to interfere with any of my freedoms that way. Any of the freedoms that they are so fast to believe that they have some right to deny me. And then they say that they did this because I was somehow posting several responses as a serious of spammers. It doesnt matter that I have said that I am not the guilty party as they want everyone to believe. It should be enough for all of you that the omniscient Collective sees all and can rule by imperial fiat. Yes, Ewan must be guilty because the Collective said he is. And see how pissy he is about it all. Oh the anger and hostility. He must be guilty of something, and besides we dont want someone like that around us anyway. Thanks for exceeded even my lowest expectations of the Collectives hypocrisy.

But all of that aside, the fact remains that the Collective has acted arbitrarily and unfairly in targeting excluding individuals form participation. And as such the Collective can not claim that it does not censor or attempt to control the discussion here.

Remove the techno death ray and stop watching for IP logons.

Oh, I see what the problem is, you know how to put the Techno Death Ray out, but you cant undo it. So that is just A O.K. with you, it doesnt matter that you got the wrong person. It doesnt matter that you had to silence 1,000 people. It just doesnt matter that you have wrongly and arbitrarily silenced someone who was innocent of the transgressions that drew your ire in the first place. It doesnt matter, just so you dont have to admit that you were wrong. Oh, God forbid that you could ever be wrong about anything. It is easier and better to just go on calling me a liar, making up stories, trying to hide the truth that the Editorial Collective has no freaking idea of how to operate a media site or how to respect the law or individual rights.

ewan,
why have you never contacted us directly? via email? or regular mail? we're all pretty upfront about our identities and are more than willing to talk your issue out. if you're actually concerned and not just trying to discredit the site, why don't you just discuss it with us? if a restaurant serves you something you don't like, you talk to the manager, right? you don't all of a sudden decide to picket the restaurant. i think. this makes me think there's more to your angry posting than just being upset about one violation of your "rights."

we're looking forward to your email

Why is it ...
by = Wednesday, Jun. 25, 2003 at 7:14 PM

that you imc staffers and others here are so intersted in protecting the anonminity of the participants until it comes to someone who is critical of imc or with whom you disagree? You try to say that imc respects this fundamental right to privacy and understands that it is this privacy that fosters open discourse on unpopular and alternative topics. But then you insist that anyone who is critical of imc should be disregarded and disrespected unless they are willing to give up this right. That is disingenuous, at best, on the part of imc. I thought that this privacy interest was one of the reasons that imc has avoided logging IP addresses. I can't see any reason why ewan would have to or should send you an email. He seems to have laid out his concerns very well in his several postings. What more do you need, other than to harass him by taunting him into identifying himself to you. Or worse, why would you ever have to meet him? Do you realize just how childish it sounds for you to challenge him to meet you in a restaraunt. What are you going to do, rough him up when he tries to leave. Why don't the imc editors, staff and volunteers just address his concerns, rather than continue with conduct that only works to prove his point about imc.

I read his last post and i think i understand better just how imc screwed up. Now you don't know how to undo the anti-spam program that i beleive you once referred to a "technically brilliant." If that is the case just be honest with us all. You will feel better for it and can only increase your stature even with your detractors.

Just because ewan believes that imc has acted improperly in branding him and everyone else he works with as spammers is no reason to call him a liar, taunt him or insult him. I actually admire his tenacity and support him in his protest. This is what we are about here. He is using the tools of the system to seek a peaceable resolution to an identified problem with the process. The imc edtors should not be congratulating themselves that someone is going through all of this trouble to undermine them. they should be congratulating themselves that the imc site is a system which supports even one individual's recognition of a flaw in the processes of this community, and provides the means to correct those flaws through careful and thoughtful self-examination. We must respect that the imc community protects even those thoughts and ideas that some may find unpopular. We ignore this at our own peril.

IMC Tech Geniuses?
by - Thursday, Jun. 26, 2003 at 3:18 PM

This isn't my area of expertise, but if there was software that could block whole remote ISP's from accessing a given site that it would be abused by hackers? That's some pretty heavy technology.

Solidarity
by N.N.F.F.O.R.O.S. Thursday, Jun. 26, 2003 at 3:55 PM

I am united with Kenkesmearse and n.n.f.f.o.r.o.s - 2. Why don't we quit discussing our personal beliefs as to whether or not the technology actually exists to block an ISP, and focus on the very real and important issue of the conduct of the editorial collective and an abuse of authority by the editorial staff.

BTW: My thoughts on the ISP Block -- it would be entirely possible to block a private web access server simply by identifying the IP addresses used by that server and then redirecting attempted access to a site from those IP addreses to a dead-end page (like a 404 location). Most private web access servers use a fixed nmber of IP addresses which would make this blocking process fairly simple (not so brilliant, just simple). That would be one way of accomplishing what Ewan is describing. I am sure there are others also.

Once Again, some background ..
by Ewan Kenkesmearse Wednesday, Jul. 02, 2003 at 12:31 AM

It is not that they hid any particular posting, but rather that they have prohibited me (and everyone else who accesses the internet through my ISP) from posting ANYTHING at the IMC site. Please re-read my other postings (http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6734_comment.php#6820 ; http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6572.php ) or some of the others on this topic which have been posted by others. I can only post now by using a PC other than my own and accessing through an ISP other than my normal ISP.

This is because the IMC Editors have ruled by secret fiat that I am a spammer. They have said (incorrectly) that I was one of several spammers that were disrupting some string when the IMC Editors unleashed some secret computer program which is capable (according to the Editors) of blocking only the spammers from access to the site without tracking anyones IP address. But that is not true, since I was not one of the spammers AND they have blocked not only me, but about 1,000 people who access the internet through my companys webserver. (That is right, every PC I tried a my company is similarly blocked.)

I am able to view the IMC site, but when I try to post anything to the site I get sent to a webpage which says: Sorry, you are no longer allowed to publish since your IP Was [sic] blocked from this site for spamming. (Try this link, and see if you get this message: http://www.indypgh.com/comment.php?top_id=6917 -- you may have to already have been hit with the cookie to get this message.) It is censorship to prohibit someone from speaking at all, not just to stop the dissemination of there statements after these are made. You know that they have done this, because they have admitted it (see posting by Matt, IMC Editor at http://www.indypgh.com/news/2003/05/6734_comment.php#6820 ). I can only say that I am not the persons that Matt is referring to. Indeed, if he were able to tell that any person was the same person using different aliases, then he would HAVE TO BE tracking IP addresses (which he says he is not). Now the question remains, how many more people have the IMC Editors done this to that can not bring this to our attention or participate in this discussion.

SOrry, but the cookie is clearly on my server
by Ewan Kenkesmearse Wednesday, Jul. 02, 2003 at 12:36 AM

The link which I included above to the page that I get when accessing through my ISP apparently does not work when you try to access that page now. Probably because you (and I right now) would not be accessing through my regular ISP. So again, it begs the question ... how can IMC say they are not logging IPs when they have clearly identified my ISP (and IP address) and done something to re-direct any attempts to add comments made from my ISP.

Tell us something we don't know
by nnfforos-4 Sunday, Jul. 06, 2003 at 8:38 AM

of course they control the discussion. If they didn't then some ideas that they don't like might be discussed around here. the editorial collective couldn't manage a third-rate college newspaper, so what makes you think they could manage imc any better. they have no respect for anyone other then their small group of firends. it would be good for all of us if the imc editors got their asses sued by rich mackin or they lost the imc tax exempt stats because of this crap. then maybe imc could begin to act like a real and respectable media source and not some high school club newsletter.

there is nothing at these links
by - Thursday, Jul. 10, 2003 at 2:22 PM

I tried your links from above. There was nothing like you said. So I guess that either you are full of shit (which is most likely the case) or imc decided to get you to shut up by removing whatever it was that you said was stopping you from posting. Either way i guess you and the rest of the trolls who think IMC is violating your rights will finally shut the hell up and stop using up IMC's bandwidth with this idiotic selfish garbage. Unless, of course, the IMC editors use their newly developed mind-control computer enhanced triple-top-secret gamma ray 802.11z gameboy to control your every thought and keep you from watching Fox News. Be careful, one of the editors told me that they have this technology and are using it right now to log the IP address of your cellphone. >:-(

One more time...
by Ewan K. Saturday, Jul. 12, 2003 at 9:24 AM

As I pointed out, you will not get the same page that I do because the cookie that IMC put out is obviously on my server. This server is used by everyone at my company. So IMC has indiscrimanately locked out over 1,000 people just because IMC thought they were silencing a couple of spammers. Isn't anyone bothered by the fact that IMC can arbitrarily decide who can and can't participate here. As I have said before I AM NOT anyone of the spammers that IMC said they were after. In fact, I have noticed some of those same spammers still posting here. The result of IMC's "Justice For The Spammers" ended up getting someone who was not a spammer.

As an aside, while I welcome the support that several people have shown on this site for this issue, I do not subscribe to the tactics of 2 beers. I don't see any reason to interrupt other discussion strings. If anyone is interested in this issue they should post their concerns here.

IMC Edtors, look at the facts...your "spammer" exclusion misfired. Your actions are not those of a an organization which should welcome and foster the free and open exchange of ideas. You have excluded over 1,000 people just becasue you thought (without any evidence) that someone who was a spammer may have been logged on to your server at a particular time (kind of like arresting everyone in a store just because you think that there is a shoplifter in the store at the same time).

I am the only one who has come back to IMC wth this issue, most likely becasue I am the only one who is upset about being unjustly accused and for having IMC deal so callously with its responsibilities to maintain a fre, fair an open media site. Locking out 1,000 people just because you can does not furhter IMC's duties to us all. Most likely, IMC has used this tactic to keep several of the posters who regularly posted diffferent viewpoints form the favored views of IMC off of the site. But we will never know since IMC is not being honest on this matter. Maybe that is why IMC's discussion traffic has dwindled to a fraction of what it was in the past.

So What Has IMC Done About This
by 2 beers Tuesday, Jul. 22, 2003 at 10:05 AM

Sorry you don't approve of my personal protest, Ewan. Just consider it permissible diversity of tactics and you don't have to think that you had anything to do with my actions. But we are nonetheless united in our cause.

It does kind of suck though that you are locked out all because the IMC editors were really after me. Just more evidence of the stupidity and arrogance of those running IMC.

The IMC editors got the wrong guy and his entire server, but I am still here. That is kind of funny. Sort of makes Ewan some kind of IMC Mumia.

ENOUGH ALREADY
by Ewan Kenkesmearse Sunday, Jul. 27, 2003 at 8:25 AM

IMC has not reversed whatever it was that they did to my internet access server. I still can not participate in any discussion here. I am upset because I believe that this was done by IMC arbitrarily and in a manner that did not guaranty that they would exclude only spammers. And clearly they did not exclude the spammers that they thought they were after. And now, a certain "2 beers" (or "2 balls") is still participating here while I can only watch as 2 Beers spams using my name.

To 2 Beers: All I want is for IMC to change certain of its editorial practices. I would like them to start by correcting the problems that they have created for me. I do not want everyone to interpret my concerns as spam. You actions diminish this message and will definitely detract from my real message to IMC and the editors. If you want to call attention to this issue, please post here and make a non-insulting coherent statement. There is no need to interrupt other strings.

To the Editors: Why don't you just reverse whatever it is that you did that has messed up my access to the IMC site (and probably the access of others who can not make their voices heard here because of what you did). But to be fair, I must admit that my frustration with the IMC site adn the editors practices, and the fact that I have not been able to participate without some major effort on my part for about four months now, kind of leaves me thinking that IMC really is not worth the effort.

Oh, Too Bad, But Those IMC Guys Don't Like You
by 2 beers Sunday, Jul. 27, 2003 at 9:21 PM

Dude, I feel your pain. The IMCers sent their cookie contraption out to get the spammers (of which they think I am one) and the cookie got stuck somewhere in the internal workings of your workplace internet access. For me it was pretty simple to fix. I just did a cookie sweep. It actually was not too difficult to identify the IMC Cookie of Silence. And I quashed it. Wish I could help you man. Why don't you talk to your IS techs at work. Maybe they could shut down your internet access for your whole company and sweep the Cookie of Silence away. And then they can sue IMC for spamming the company's server with an intrusive program.

It is too bad that you don't think that my protest tactics will be beneficial to your cause. I think that what your protest needs is some good Diversity of Tactics. You can walk along quietly in the street or on the sidewalk singing KumBaya about the arbitrary and hypocratic IMC Editorial policy, and I will overturn a couple of dumpsters here and there or hold up traffic until IMC stops this ridiculous policy of oppression. That is what this calls for. I respect your tactics, you respect mine. I don't have to agree with your tactics. You don't have to agree with mine. But our cause is united and we will win our struggle.

Dude, you are the IMC equivalent of Mumia. Unjustly accused, persecuted and prosecuted. You have lost your rights in this community. You can not speak, so we the true freedom loving members of the IMC community must speak for you. This I will do my brother. Your silence only amplifies the cries of freedom on the IMC pages. I can not stand by while your good name is besmerched and your voice silenced. This is the only thing that can possible get the justice that is deserved from the IMC editors. They must reverse the technological travesty that they have worked upon Ewan.
