City workers protest Murphy on Grant
by JohnRPGH Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 at 12:28 PM

For Pittsburgh Indymedia

An estimated 200 city workers that are going to be layed off are protesting on Grant street in front of the City County building, some walking back and forth across the road blocking traffic.
This is a continuation of protests against mayor Murphy for his ignoring the needs of the city by laying off workers and cutting transit while still finding money for construction projects and a party for the rich at the convention center.
There are no reports of police present or any attempt of stopping the protests, most likely because the police are also struggling with Murphy's layoffs, losing 100 officers recently. ...will be updated if anything changes.

we need more updates like these during protests (hint, wink, cough...A24) Peep out the Portland Indy Media site. When the shrub was just in Portland, IMC was updating their site with protest news as the day went by.
The police have started warning protesters to "cool it" and not be as rowdy, but the crowd is still blocking traffic.

Some protesters have layed down in the middle of the street for a short time and other protesters convinced them to get out of the road.

IMC stuff

Yes, what is really needed for events like A24 is to do minute by minute type updates that show breaking news/updates

These are great because:
They let people follow the events at home/work/people from out of town and creates anticipation about what will happen next
Allows people to join the events in progress when there is update on where folks are at with only a couple minutes lag time
helps not clog the newswire with stuff like- 200 people assembled or just saw a bunch of cops racing towards ___

This typically happens at big protests-summits, but it's hard to do for smaller imc's. Would be nice, but not IMC's fault if they don't have the resources.

Pittsburgh IMC HAS done this, I remember from the die-in on J26, M20, many of them had minute-by-minute updates.

the merits of John-RPGH's report should serve as a reminder to all IMC readers: volunteer to be part of the collective. report live on scene. manage the website. make videos. publish photographs. write features. liase with community groups.

experience not necessary.

our next meeting is Saturday, Sept. 6, 2pm at Project 1877. or email info@indypgh.org for more info.
