The Israel Lobby & War on Iran
“Why Would the U.S. Attack Iran?”
2006-10-22 3:18 PM
While the Israel-First crowd isn't the only group that has called for attacking Iran, they are the primary ones doing so today. The more pragmatic imperialist camp - though certainly wanting to see Iran internationally isolated & advocating for "regime change" - have pretty much dropped the rhetoric about direct military assault since it as become clear that we really don't have the means to make such an attack serve U.S. interests. Only the Israel-First crowd -spearheaded by Israelis (like Olmert & Netanyahu), but strongly backed by their allies here - are still blatantly threatening military action. This has become especially true since entering election season - a new war is NOT a good sell. http://www.whyattackiran.com/ (text/plain)

In Beyond Chutzpah I argued that across the political spectrum historians have now reached a broad consensus on the Israel-Palestine conflict's origins. A recent study strikingly confirms this thesis. Shlomo Ben-Ami was Israel's Foreign Minister and key Israeli negotiator at the Camp David and Taba meetings in 2000-1. In his new book, Scars of War, Wounds of Peace: The Israeli-Arab Tragedy (Oxford: 2006), Ben-Ami covers a lot of the same ground as my own Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict (Verso: 2003). *Privatized Prisons Are A Booming Big Business*
Ytzhak
2006-09-08 7:00 PM![]()
The United States of AmeriKKKa imprisons more of its citizens than any
other nation on the planet. Currently almost two and a quarter million
persons languish in local, county, state and federal prisons. Looking at
the AmeriKKKan gulag we see some very disturbing trends aside from the
disproportionate incarceration of people of color. Investments in the
prison industrial complex, prison construction, privatization of prisons
and public policies that encourage incarceration over intervention and
treatment are fueling the rise of prison construction and incarceration
at a time when even according to FBI statistics major crimes are
decreasing! ...This, for example, is
why longer mandatory sentences are worth so much to private prison
stocks. A prisoner in jail for twenty years has a twenty-year cash flow
associated with his incarceration, as opposed to one with a shorter
sentence or one eligible for an early parole. This means that we have
created a significant number of private interests — investment firms,
banks, attorneys, auditors, architects, construction firms, real estate
developers, bankers, academics, investors among them— who have a vested
interest in increasing the prison population and keeping people behind
bars as long as possible. (image/jpeg)
